Re: Help, Please!

Hi Thanks for the reply. I don't have a sandblaster, so is there another way to scuff them up by hand? Thanks! Yes--get yourself some wet-dry sandpaper at the hardware store, or check online at places like HIS Glassworks for diamond hand-pads. I use 400-grit and switch to 600-grit if I'm not fire-p...

Re: pate de verre kiln

It partly depends on how big you work and how many you need to turn out in a relatively short period of time. About the only downside to buying a large kiln that I can see is that it costs more to run it--NOT because it necessarily draws more power, but because the urge to make larger pieces and fil...

Re: float glass

Pat, with Brad's new forum software, you can search the archives for the stuff you're looking for and then "bookmark" it in your user control panel. If you look around, Brad's posted instructions on doing that. The neat thing about doing it that way is that you find a lot of other good thi...

Re: Stuck in a rut-need an education!

I have the same problem as Wabisabi. I also am largely self taught, but I think I can top her problem with location. I live in Central Indiana. That's just about as 'rural America" as you can get. I would like to advance my glass knowledge too, and have the same budgets constraints as wabisabi...

Re: How can we make dichroic nametags?

If you're into casual with the nametags, get a marker and write them on the bottom glass, cap it with clear and fire. I've had good luck using the Brite-Mark Valve Action Paint Marker (Bullseye sells it--it's the white stuff they mark their glass with). I'll cut a thin sheet of silver or gold irid o...

Re: Wasser- Is it compatible with 90 or 96??

Oops, hit a nerve. I guess it was the tone of the remark. I guess I just get tired of hearing the same response from Bullseye whenever anyone names a glass by its COE. And excuse me if I find that that particular response smacks of marketing. (Don't use the other guys glass just because it is suppo...

If you can manage to get over there, check out Orrefors and Kosta Boda. I believe they give tours. Never able to go (every time I've been in Scandinavia it's been on business and I haven't had a minute to spare) but I hear it's great.

Well, unless the Tacoma Glass Museum has improved greatly since last year, I'm not sure it's worth the trip. I gave 'em a fair bit of money before they opened, flew all the way out from the east coast for the opening...and was extremely disappointed. Chihuly's bridge is fascinating and there's a nic...

I absolutely agree that the art is what makes the sale...but I also agree with Riley's in this case. Once buyers are familiar with your work, the name is less important than the fact that you're using it consistently. Before then, though, you want to be careful. What is your ultimate goal for your w...

Wow--what helpful information! :D I really liked the 1414 for its size and "bathtub" shape, but I was a bit concerned about the elements, with some justification, sounds like. The clamshell might be the better, option, even though I don't get that lovely size. I do like the way the element...

Considering Skutt kiln

I've found a Skutt GM1414 kiln at a pretty good price and am getting very serious about buying it. Can anyone tell me about their experiences with this model? What should I watch out for? Any special way to vent? Anything I should know about setting it up?

All help most welcome!

Thanks--

Depends on the show and venue. If it's in a big convention center, many have a shipping center within the complex. Other big shows have a shipping booth right on the floor. First thing I'd do is check with the show organizer to see what's available. If you've got shippers onsite, see if you can get ...

They've said it before, but communication is really the key. The work doesn't always sell itself, no matter how much we'd like it to, and the gallery owners may need owner involvement. Or the work isn't properly priced. Or the gallery's in a bad location. Or the gallery's patrons aren't into glass. ...

Pink suggestions

You might want to call the Bullseye resource center in Portland. They had a marvelous exhibit a couple of months ago showing the wide range of shades they got from different batches of a cool-toned pink opal (301, referenced earlier) produced at different times. The shades strike a bit, and after fi...

Ouch! Does smart business=evil artist?

Well, I would suppose it depends on whether or not you're patenting your own style or a glassworking technique. (Your note says, "lay off my signature style" which makes me think it's not actually the technique you're worried about, or did I misunderstand?) I would think your style much ea...
