Re: Use of kiln space

Valerie This is probably a very naive question....when firing the samples of glass as you suggest, does it make any difference if I use the rolled edges of the glass? And to the others who answered.....if I am firing a thicker project with a longer anneal time, I assume it does not make any differen...

Re: Glass moved during slump

Marty
There was an earthquake a few years ago that rattled the windows in my office in Kingston ...very spooky.
Should I put my molds on kiln furniture when I slump?
I have not done that....everything so far seems to slump well.....except these little two 3 x 3s

Re: Glass moved during slump

David
All the molds have little holes in them & the holes are clear.
Are molds always supposed to be put on kiln furniture? Oh dear.....somehow I missed that

Re: Fusing schedule question

Thanks for the input. i used Laurie's suggested schedule and annealed it for three hours as she & Brock suggested. i used a top temp of 1460, so the piece has texture. I'm pleased with the results, although the edges are not even enough. I may have access to some cold working equipment or do som...

Re: Glass moved during slump

wow...thanks to all who answered. here we go...most importantly, I doubt the dog kicked the kiln. now that we've gotten that out of the way.... Marty..my kiln seems to heat evenly and the prior fuse with the tiles prepared at the same time and slumped a few days before using the same molds slumped p...

Glass moved during slump

Hi (again....am I asking too many questions?) Can anyone tell me why a piece of glass moves off the center of the mold during slumping? See photo below There were 4 squares in the kiln Two 3x 3 Two 4 x 4 The smaller ones both moved off center The larger ones remained fully on the molds Thank you Susan

Use of kiln space

Hi I'd appreciate some ideas of how to make better use of shelf space when firing. My shelf is 12.5 x 12.5. When I fire an 8 x 8 piece at a full fuse, there is a lot of empty space left on the kiln shelf. Other than making 3 x 3 coasters or mini dishes, I don't have any other ideas for using the spa...

Fusing schedule question

Hi I am experimenting with something new for me....stacked squares & rectangles. The base is 8 x 8 white opal. I plan to slump the blank. I used all opal BE glass for the stacks, which are three high plus the base except for the center, which is 4 high plus base. my kiln is an olympic champ XL. ...

Karl is teaching at Oatka Glass in Batavia, NY this spring and summer. Great studio.
I've taken beginning & internediate fusing clases with owners, Lance & Amanda Taylor. B & B to stay nearby.
Studio is about hour and half from Cornning.

Dams & strip construction

Hi My weekend project is to figure out how to replicate a strip constructed project I completed at a class. The strips and windows are cut and I plan to put them together tomorrow. I did not take good enough notes on setting up the dams around the constructed project. I've searched the forum but do ...

Cat hair in the lid! I use cutter oil in a lid but leave it exposed. My cat likes to sit on my work table looking out the window. I'll start to protect the lid from his hair. Thanks for mentioning this.

Re: Error message on kiln controller

Thanks Brad & Hedda Here's the slumping schedule I used: 1 300 1225 :10 2 AFAP 900 1:00 3 100 700 :00 4 APAP 70 :00 Brad, Looks like what you suggested as the problem is in fact what happened. I decided to wait until the morning to put the next fuse in the kiln so I could watch it. It's four 4 X...

Error message on kiln controller

Hi....Seems like my weekend for questions. Thanks so much for your advice. I put a slump firing in the kiln this morning before leaving the house. When I returned the temp in the kiln was 315 and the piece was fully slumped. The next time I checked a few hours later, the controller had the error mes...

Re: Glass cooling

Thanks, Bert. Good advice about investment in a piece. It is still so new to me. I am eager to fire more pieces as I experiemnt with techniques and it is such a slow process. My Olympic Champ xl kiln is too small!

Glass cooling

Hi So, it's 8 PM and I have a slump cooling down in the kiln...temp is now 300. I have another slump ready to go in and would like to get it in the kiln before bed tonight. At what temp can I either remove the peep hole or prop open the kiln and if so, how much can it be opened? I'd like to have thi...
