You might want to serach the archives. There is a plethora of information on micas. Basically, for an even coating, you need to airbrush them and the medium of choice is Klyr Fire. Apply multiple thin coats and fire to about 1380.

it's called a pancake compressor, and it probably won't have enough cfs to do much sandblasting.[/quote] Hey Charlie: What I meant was if RJ was going to get into sandblasting and was going to buy a compressor, that the sandblasting compressor could be used for both. Wasn't suggesting the pancake fo...

You are lucky. The Michaels' here in Eugene is still selling them for $159.00 so apparently this isn't nationwide...at least yet. I'd suggest you go to Home Depot or Sears or such and purchase one of those mushroom (bubble) type of compressors. They are usually rated for about 120 PSI and sell for l...

Re: First Post From Higgins Glass
Hi, My name is Jon and I work for the Higgins Glass Studio Hi Jon: It's good to see you on the board. Our visit to the Higgins studio over a year ago was a highlight for our Chicago class. It was such a pleasure seeing the studio, the wonderful work and meeting Frances, and you, in person. Please e...

Hi Nancy: You can use the A-13 to mix with your paints/enamels, and add a bit of gum arabic. I usually sandblast a tooth in the glass if I'm going to paint, and I normally use Paradise Paints. They are dense opaque paints. You can purchase them already mixed in pine oil, or in the dry form and then ...

Hi Nancy: I don't like oil based products and avoid them if possible. For screening, I use Thompson A-13 a waterbased acrylic medium. It is very similar to squeegee oil. If I'm airbrushing with any paint mixture, I use Klyr Fire..another water based medium. The one thing to know, if you're silkscree...

Re: Does copper luster oxidize?
[quote="Erik Brown"Thanks for the information. That's just what I wanted to hear! I have a couple of ideas for some Christmas tree ornaments, and I was hoping I wouldn't have to use coatings to protect the copper (somehow just doesn't seem right). What would I be looking for when performin...

Re: Does copper luster oxidize?
Does the copper have to be protected with some sort of coating, or does it get absorbed into (and thus is protected by) the glass like the micas? Thanks! Erik Hi Erik: Copper Lusters (by Hanovia) do not oxidize. They are stable once fired to maturation and will not change over time. The do not need...

Re: Root cause analysis
Brock, Do you know for a fact that the merc relay failed or was it in fact the control signal to the relay that stuck on? It is my understanding that a merc relay turns off from gravity thus cannot fail in the on position. The only way it could fail on is that the enegerizing coil was on thus the f...

GAS article by Brad
Well said Brad!!! Just received my copy of the GAS newsletter and found your article immediately. You've brought up a very important topic - the nightmare of seeing kiln forming pattern books emerging, rather than good technical books. I hope this topic can be addressed at both BeCon and WGW. Avery

Nonetheless, when somebody comes up with a better fence, I'll be in line to buy one! (as long as it's that cool red color) Steve Count me in on that too! I have a new MK101 and it is a terrific piece of equipment, with the exception of the fence. When I get down to the last 2 inches on a pattern ba...

Hi Lauralei: I'll look forward to meeting you at Corning. It should be a fabulous class...two whole weeks; state of the art equipment, and the fabulous Rakow library! Plus, Brock and I have a few surprises in store!!! On the micas, you can sponge them, paint them, etc, but they will show brush marks...

I've been working with micas for over 15 years. They can be applied in a variety of ways, but airbrushing is best for a smooth and even coverage. They do not melt, so you need to get your base glass vitreous enough for them to stick. Somewhere between 1350-1415 depending on your kiln. If you overfir...

Hi Ron: The Skutt Clamshell is very similar in design. We just finished using one in a class at NW Art in Seattle and are very impressed with it. The controller wall mounts....(finally, a manufacturer who understands what heat does to controllers mounted on kilns), and it is very user friendly. The ...
