Since we have UPS and FedEx accounts, I use their posted charge plus $7. This is $5 for the boxing and $2 for the fuel upcharges, boxes, packing materials, etc. that are hidden in the costs of shipping....not to mention TIME. - Barbara

Sales Tax Audit

Well, I guess it had to happen sometime. I am being audited by the NC Dept of Revenue for Sales and Use Tax (or whatever reason they choose to give me). Some of the things they are asking me for really set my thinking cap on high alert. The main thing I started to double-check was my file on Resale ...

This thread is of great interest. Am seriously planning to get to Arrowmont (again) in April for the Silk-Screening on Glass class. Sounds like a winner. - Barbara

I use a refractory cement made for boilers. Cost about $18.00 for 100 lb bag. Does not shrink, but weighs a ton. Mixes like cement with water, and I don't use a kiln wash for slumping molds. I don't know if the material is what you are looking for, especially since it is so heavy, but email me and I...

I use 1/2" LD board a LOT. I have never rigidized or sanded them. The only time I lose them is when I break them from misuse. Then I just use the pieces-parts. Just my input. - Barbara

Ya know...I just gotta respond to this, because what was just said sparks a response. Look at the Broadway plays like "Cats", "Mame", whatever...plays that have lasted ever so long and why? I think it is because the design, presentation, message of the work is so fresh every time...

I have 2 Denvers. I personally like a fiber kiln. There is a lot of info about them in the archives (pro and con). I don't know what you consider a great price, but if it's in good working order, with a decent controller, then go for it. - Barbara

I need the channel on both sides of the 4" tile, so it simply slides in to form the border. Hope that's clearer. - Barbara

Thanks for the tips. I did go all over Furniture Market in High Point. Actually found what I wanted there a few years ago, placed the order, and the company could not get the product. "Tabled" that idea for a while. Also found some Malayasian tables that would work at Lowes, but have not b...

Mirror Frames & Tables

Hi Guys...I don't know if you can help me, but I am attempting to locate simple (perhaps even unfinished) wood occasional tables that I can rout out the tops to insert my glass tile as simple borders. Also, wood or metal mirror frames (preferably channeled) that I can insert 4x4 tiles into to create...

There is a "stain remover" (don't remember the name) that *should* remove the staining. We had this problem with iridized glass after applying the patina. Aslo, I would suggest using a cloth only dampened with the patina and rapidly lightly rubbing the solder. It takes only a little patina...

Even castings from slip-cast molds shrink. We made tableware plaster slip-cast molds and the castings fired about 1/2" smaller than the original plates. Good process for production tho. - Barbara

Jim, I have a Covington and am very happy with it. Actually, the thing sat in storage for many years after I purchased it from a friend. Once I started using it, I don't know how I got along without it. Of course, I only use it for fine sanding work, not "grinding". - Barbara

You should be able to get to 1270 within the hour (in a fiber kiln, especially). I fire 2 layers of Spectrum to 1400 in 45 minutes. Of course, I'm an old, maverick fuser, so you may not even want to listen to me. Fire fast as you want for testing. Every kiln will be quite different. Also depends on ...

We usually mixed a 50/50 of white kerosene and a very fine motor oil (like a sewing machine oil). We bought up all the Mobil Ultralube we could find before it was no longer available. Another popular oil used by the float glass people is WD-40. - Barbara

Sorry about missing the title. (just knew it started with an "s"). If you've ever been to "Market", you must know how frenzied it is. Takes days and days to go through it, and you never see it all. I go to get a handle on upcoming styles and colors. Besides it's a non-stop party....

Deinitely appeared to be Pot Melt. Couple of pieces entitled "Solitary" They were really nice, in custom iron stands and polished both sides. That's why they almost looked "blown". I just loved seeing them in that venue. Congratulations, Rick. - Barbara

Rick Jarvis' work

Don't know if this is the proper place to post, but knew when I saw the glass disks and the name "Rick Jarvis" on them, they had to belong to our own Rick. The International Home Furnishings Market is now in progress in High Point NC and I was there Sunday. This market spans an entire city...
