The consensus was that is was an incompatibility related to the pinks and cranberries.

Fired 3rd time - still in slump mold ( could that be the key to my madness?) to bring the paint to glossy red. Result - enormous flying crane over mt Kilamanjaro... Did you take it out of the mold after the 2nd firing, and then put it back into the mold again? Or just leave it in and refire? Steve

You could try cutting a square out of the center of a 12" piece of ceramaguard, or several layers of J-100.

This would give you something that looked like this:

My kids made a couple of dinner plates for themselves, and ate on them contuously for about two years, going through the dishwasher each time, without cracking.

They did show some wear and tear as the years went by (as will ceramic plates). Just make sure you anneal them well.
