If you are going to use ss rings you need to remember that the ss shrinks more than the glass. When I have cast with them I use 1/4 fiber paper on the first firing then 1/8 fiber paper on each successive firing. You need the cusion so the ss doesn't crack the glass.

Ok Dennis, I think you are contradicting yourself when you say that it is not our (the artists) responsibility to educate the consumer but to respond to them. Then you go on to say that the consumer accepted Picasso. If we (artists) are supposed to respond to the consumer then we will always be play...

I would call you State Dept. of Revenue (sp?) They should be very capable of helping you determine what you need to do.

Amy,

I am convinced that the "patron" has no idea about what goes into a piece. It's something that a person can't really appreciate until they've gone through the pain.

I'm also beginning to thing gallery owners don't have a clue either.

Well I talked to the gallery owner about what I wanted to do with the piece. I think I'm going to either make a new piece for the juried exhibition or make the gallery a new piece of the same or greater value to trade out. I talked to him about the purpose of entering in the show and who was the jur...

Ha, Brad that was the other quandry! I think that honesty is the best here so I'll probably just call them and talk to them to see how they feel. The deadline for the show isn't until April 1 so I do have time to make a piece. If I can't use the one I wanted to.

Thanks everyone,

How would you handle this Gallery/Artist situation?

Hi everyone, I am looking to submit to some juried exhibitions this year. There are certian pieces I would like to submit but they are currently at a gallery that is near me. Should I pull them out now? Or just tell the gallery owner what I'm doing and if the piece is selected into the show then I p...

To help you we need to know what glass you are using. If it's BE you should take a look at their annealing thick glass chart. You are going WAY too fast.

I agree that a good photographer is worth the money. I myself have yet to use one, they are very expensive. I do want to caution you though, not every professional photographer knows how to shoot glass. GET REFRENCES! And be sure you see their work first before you plunk any money down. I know many,...

Cool New Tool

Good morning everyone, Just got a new tool. I bought it because we are installing tile in our bath room, so of course I am going to use it on my glass work... It's an alpha 4" wet circular saw. It sprays water everywhere, but if you need to make really long cuts or can't afford a 10" tile ...

Well Mira, I had an idea but I don't think it's going to work for a box casting. The casting will be way too thick. The ones I've seen are at least an inch and a half thick and that takes a couple of days to fire, minimum.

Sorry you are kinda stuck.

Hope you can figure it out.

So Mira,

Correct me if I don't understand... You can't program your controller to go below 1000F, be it going slowly or soaking.

How thick are you working? 1/2"? 1"? 2"?

I can't remember if you indicated that your kiln is fiber or brick.

Mira, You need to understand what annealing is. It is the slow decent of temp. through a given set of temp. It's not just one temp. or sitting at one temp. for a given amount of time. I don't use S96 so I couldn't tell you what the range is but hopfully someone else with experience will. Good luck, ...

Sometimes if you haven't pre-burned out your fiber paper the fumes can fall back onto the glass and cause scum. You can avoid this by pre-burning out your paper and venting your kiln during the firing. I just put a 1" kiln post to prop the lid open until 1000F. This is only with regular fiber p...

Are you talking about the opal Gold Purple?

Generally speaking opal colors are more likely to devit, but are you sure it's devit? Is it scum from fiber paper that wasn't burned out? Just asking questions, not assuming you don't know.

We need to know more about the firing to help you out.
