Why does one have to choose? I have a full rack of both. Each has it's own palette, pros, and cons. By using both types I have at my disposal the widest field of choice available. The only downside is the keeping inventory and offcuts separate.

Thanks Brock. I've done this before but my memory is bad and my notes are lacking. I plan on capping (with chads) at 1480F.

Capping blasted irid

After sanblasting a design on "96" black irid, do I need to fire polish before I clear cap? or can I clear cap (about 14" dia.) over the blasted design and get good result?

I predict there will be some ash, best to stick in a few small test pieces next time you run the kiln. You could also try running some steel wool over the wire to remove the laquer.

Studio suggestions

I suggest lots of counters with cupboards underneath around perimeter and a large 4' x 8' or bigger work table(strong/solid) on casters in the middle of the room. Being able to work on all sides is a real plus. All of these surfaces become very handy not just for working but for display during parti...

I run an Evenheat coffin that is placed 12" away from a regular stud wall with a standard drywall finish. The heat outside this kiln at 12" is minimal.I think you don't need anything special if you keep a reasonable clearance.

pot melt break

Hi Randy I feel your pain and frustration. I have a pot melt about 12" dia that I fused on a double rim plus a clear base bringing it up to 20"dia and about 3 layers thick. A week later it broke in half exactely like yours. I know it was not the schedule-- I suspected a small piece of non ...

That should not be considered rocking the boat. It's just good business relations to spell it out. If you don't then that sleeping dog you mentioned may very well bite you.

I bought a sheet of each of the 5 new cathedral colours on Wed. My wholesaler (Kaliedo Glass) in Ontario had just received them and were kind enough to open their crates and pull out one of each for me. They are: Moss green 526-2; Navy blue 538-6; Aqua 533-3; Bronze 518-1; and Violet 534-2. All make...

Instead of a detailed explaination of the process I usally just thank them for their compliments and let them know that I'll answer any questions they may have. I've also found they are quite surprised or impressed when I tell them how many hours a large fruit bowl spends in the kiln. They often bri...

You didn't say how big your piece was or how close to the side elements it is in kiln. I think Brians advice re: baffling is the way to go.

wet shelf

I'd be cautious about the hair dryer tip. Moisture could have penetrated deeper into the shelf then the hair dryer will dry. This moisture could vaporize and cause a BIG bubble in the middle of your next masterpiece!
