I use it straight out of the container without washing or rinsing it and am not looking to add this step to my process unless a bunch of you swear by it. Thanks for the reply Bert. I have to admit that since using the R and R 101 investment, the one test I haven't done is to fire a mold without a separator. I have no idea what they use in their mix and have a feeling they aren't telling. My previous experiments (Amaco casting mix) without a separator...

Does mixing kilnwash into investment degrade the strength of the plaster? I seem to remember Cynthia suggesting adding up to 20% by weight. My molds are all small, open faced, with very fine detail so brushing kilnwash on hasn't really been working for me. Ive been using MR-97 which works really wel...

I am about to load up another round of molds with frit and am hoping to use a borax spray to prevent any devit. Some of the spray will undoubtedly end up on the plaster (R and R 101). Will this degrade the plaster in any way or have some kind of reaction? Also, everyone describes devit as "whit...

I spray my silicone patterns with some rubbing alcohol right before I pour (evaporates quickly). The 'wetness' helps the plaster flow across the silicone and not trap any bubbles as you pour. the alcohol lowers the surface tension of the water in your investment helping to break any small bubbles su...
