Re: Tips for using rocker wall switch plate mold IMD1036
Looks like it would work. I would love to try it. I just bought on of those holey molds that are similar for jewlery (concave) and it works fine. But, even though the link takes me to exact page, BUT then I cannot get to the home page of the company to order it. (it says I need a password? Is this ...

Kiln wash (or use Boron Nitride spray). Put rolled up Thin fire or fiber paper in holes, and fill with frit. Mound the frit towards the "middle" and away from all the edges to help prevent spiking.

Re: Pacemaker and kiln
I'm curious to know if you have tested your household oven (not a microwave, just a regular oven). Seems like a kiln would be similar to other household appliances (oven, dryer, toaster, etc). Even your cell phone puts out a magnetic field. This link from the American Heart Assoc. says that microwav...

Re: Screen Melts
I have been experimenting with the stretch and flow of glass. Irid surfaces can be trapped inside of glass, but if the glass stretches or flows, the irid resists, as it cannot stretch. The stress shows up in the annealing range with major and minor cracking. By rapidly, I meant the slightest stretc...

Re: Advice on tile saws
I've used an MK and really like it. It one of the next things on my list (I currently have a crappy little swap top. Got it VERY cheap with all the swap options, so I went for it. Figure it will be great when/if my grinder dies).

For non-wholesale, smaller quantities, I have found Fire Mountain Gems a good source for findings.

Oh, also, I agree with Bob on Clay-King. I bought two of my kilns from them. Great prices, quick shipping.

Re: Kiln Recommendation
I have the Fusion 14. Great kiln. It does heat a little slowly -- that's a lot of space to heat on 120V power -- but in most instances, you don't need to be going faster than the kiln will go anyway. Keep in mind that the shelf in a 14" kiln is 13" or less (gotta have "finge...

Re: Shock from kiln
I really doubt you'd mistake a real electrical shock to the head with static. I would bet it was static and it just felt worse because it was to a sensitive part of the body. (trust me I got a static shock the other day from my sandblaster to the rather sensitive area) An electrical shock to the he...

Re: Internet source for 4lb jars of uruborus frit
Hi All, Does anyone have a good Internet source for uruborus frit in 4 lb jars? I have done countless Google searches and have found some places that will special order but none that stock. 'Special order' can mean 8 weeks. Needless to say, sometimes It's hard to wait that long. I live in the great...

Re: Fusing bullseye with copper foil
If you don't sandwich the copper between layers of glass it will turn black and burn away. It may be because I always used float glass and the air got to it longer before the glass sealed on the edges. Perhaps that is your experience, but I have seen a piece where the copper was on the kiln shelf, ...

Re: Slumping technique question
As Judd mentioned, if a mold was used, or even slumping on a kiln shelf, one side would be flat. I was struggling with figuring out (with my very limited knowledge) how that might work. Paula I would argue "not necessarily". If the bottom of the mold were concave then that side would not ...

Re: Fusing bullseye with copper foil
I have been told the difference between whether copper will turn red or blue depends upon how much air gets to it. Fuse copper between pieces of glass and it will turn blue. If you put the copper down on the shelf first and top with glass, the copper will turn red. My wild assumption is if you provi...

Re: Microwave/Dishwasher Safe?
i'm doing a market this weekend, and the guy beside me has cutting boards (amazingly beautiful boards, at that). He and another woodworker were sharing stories, and he said that one woman bought 8 cutting boards, ran them through the dishwasher, and then complained to him because they bleached and w...

Many of us live in a "glass desert". Much of learning is picking up the basics (reading, classes, videos, etc.), and then experiment, experiment, experiment!
