Re: tack fusing 4 layers 3mm without dams to keep the volume

Ed, thanks so much for that great idea.

Do you just use kiln wash on the TC or do you cut fiber paper circles?

With the edge particles - how much of an edge on, say, a 6-inch diameter blank?

Re: calculating weight of glass for potmelts

This made me curious about the specific gravity of recycled glass cullet, which I use sometimes. Surprise - it is also 2.5 (well, 2.49 if you want to get picky). http://www.penndot.gov/ProjectAndPrograms/RoadDesignEnvironment/Environment/PollutionPrevention/Documents/FS-%20GC%20Fact%20Sheet%20FINAL%...

Re: "Dumbing down" of glass art?

I appreciate so many of the posts on this topic - so, first, a general Thank You for all the thoughtful responses. My start in warm glass was when I took a community arts center class in fusing almost three years ago, and it was like a FB group - no formal instruction, everything was fired by the in...

Re: Sand mold for IN the kiln

Hi Tony - I am also interested in this technique - does it matter what kind of plaster? No. 1 plaster, or plaster of Paris...?

Re: calculating weight of glass for potmelts

Yes, 2.5 is specific gravity of Bullseye. I believe you also have to add 10% to allow for the glass that sticks to the pot. If you’re trying to calculate the volume of an irregular-shaped object (say a plaster mold for a sculpture), you weigh a large container of water, fill the mold with water to t...

Re: How to polish a casted sculpture

I’d like to hear more from Cynthia and anyone else about hand-polishing cast glass. In a casting workshop I just took, the only techniques demonstrated were: potter’s wheel with sanding surface; loose grit on plate glass; wet belt sander. I don’t have the room or money for the potter’s wheel or wet ...

Re: Drop mold for a spoon rest (open end)

Oh, good reminder about using PAPYRUS (same here, love Papyrus :) to line the mold. This may all be moot, as this morning I fired the molds with rigidizer (from Delphi), and not only did it stink to high heaven but it turned everything with kilnwash - shelf, posts, floor - BLACK. I got the worst of ...

Re: Drop mold for a spoon rest (open end)

Hi Judd, Sorry I wasn't clear. I'm not slumping a bottle. I'm slumping art glass. I fused two layers of art glass and now I want to make a spoon rest with it by slumping it through a custom mold made of 1/4" fiber felt, on 1/2" posts. I can make the drop mold with a round spoon shape and a...

Drop mold for a spoon rest (open end)

I'd like to use 1/4" fiber felt to make a custom drop mold, which would create a spoon rest. Looking at the ceramic spoon rest that I currently own, it looks like I should make an oval and then a long slot that goes all the way to the edge. Here's the ceramic spoon rest IMG_2349-2.jpg IMG_2351-...

Cheap vases - are they safe to fire?

I bought some colored vases and bottles at Dollar Tree thinking that I could use them for color accents on my float glass creations. But when I broke them up, I saw that the thick bottoms are clear glass; only the thin sides have color. I'm concerned that the colors are some superficial coating (lik...

Re: Opinions needed for new kiln

I am considering buying a new (preferably used) kiln, and have lots of questions - so I apologize in advance! (I hope the moderators will move this post if it needs a new thread) UPDATE - just saw an add here for an Olympic 1814GFE so would appreciate any thoughts about that particular kiln and its ...
