Re: Pot Melt Primer

Can anyone comment on the use of tile strips to stabilize dams, please? On another point, part of the ooze on the bottom of the kiln was made up of porcelain tile strips I'd used to shore up the dam. I'd read here on the board that someone used them for weight behind dams. I had some so thought I'd...

Re: Light box for display

Does LED lighting throw enough light to light up a light box? They're more compact than tube florescents. Compact florescents are available too.LED's might be a better alternative as there would be little or no heat generated and venting wouldn't be an issue? Just curious. Craft departments sell box...

Sorry, Karen, can't help with your question but just thought I'd let you know I'd been speed-reading your name for years as: 'the animal all over'. Duh! :P

Re: Screen printing TPI Question

Thanks again, Barry and Bert. I've left a message with Ferro in Oz and hope to hear from them. That would be the most convenient if they have what I need here. I think I'll order A-14 so I'll have an idea how anything I might in future cook up as a substitute compares to the 'real thing'. I have lot...

Re: Screen printing TPI Question

Thank you Terry, Bert and Barry for the additional information. Terry, I'm not sure if your question about the type of emulsion was directed to Bert, Barry or to me so I'll tell you what I bought to use. I haven't used it yet. It's Ulano Proclaim, and is apparently resistant to both oil and water-ba...

Re: sudden, mysterious 'film' on glass

Bonnie, I don't have the experience of the other people who have responded but the first thing I'd try would be Mary Lou's suggestion to sandblast with a fine grit, 220 perhaps, then if you don't want to fire polish, use diamond pads to polish or bring to a satin matte finish. Morganica often mentio...

Re: Screen printing TPI Question

Thanks Don and Barry. If I could buy A14 here I would as I like instant gratification, but none of the Oz suppliers seem to carry it, hence the hunt for a suitable medium made from locally-sourced ingredients. Buying A-14 from the US will triple the price with postage, not to mention the time it wil...

Re: Screen printing TPI Question

Thank you Ted and Bert for the input. I already have CMC mixed up, just the CMC and water cooked up per the ratios recommended here and in Rick's book, with nothing else added. I used it to make the test strip enamels that are waiting to be fired. I haven't purchased any commercially-prepared water ...

Re: Screen printing TPI Question

Ted, thank you so much for your detailed response and offer to answer questions. I've seen your glass before and was impressed with your technique. I've screen-printed on both fabric and paper sometime last century and am comfortable with getting the image on the screen and ready to print. I haven't...

Peter, can you put it in the kitchen oven, if there's already something in your kiln? Just on low, enough to evaporate the moisture? Jen

Screen printing TPI Question

After an exhaustive search of the archives and some Googling I cannot find a chart or other information about choosing the TPI for a specific application, onto glass. I know BE's tutorial recommends a 230 TPI for fine detail but will that also work for laying down a smooth even layer of enamel onto ...

Well done, Babette, you must be thrilled. I've long been fascinated by cave paintings and was lucky enough to visit the caves at Altamira before they were closed to conserve the paintings. Jen.

Hi Valerie, Thanks for that topic link; I had been watching that one for tips and advice. A funny story: I had bought Jody's book, and it was shipped to me very promptly (thanks Brad and Jody). Upon arrival at my house, my toddler got his hands on it, and carried through the house and lost it. Lite...

I don't believe Greg has been anywhere near the great barrier reef? I have been diving on Australia's great barrier reef for 50 years and I have never seen anything like that underwater. "Preserving the great barrier reef" have you been there lately. I have been going there for 50 years, ...

Re: Pot Melt Primer

Don, I'm sure it was clay. I was alert to that when I bought it. (It's definitely not plastic.) When the hole at the bottom was chipped out to make it larger the flakes that came away looked like every other broken clay pot I've ever seen. It was made in Italy and labelled clay. Jen

Re: Porcelain Kitchenware for Slumping?

A fast down and dirty method on glazed ceramic surfaces is to coat with spray adhesive, then dust on a layer of dry kiln wash. I use my small glass enamel/powder dispenser to make a smooth layer. The glue burns out but the powder stays in place. Have gotten multiple uses if the mold surface is not ...
