base

Hi Steve. I bought an HTC 1000 universal base from Amazon for my wet belt. It works great. You adjust it when you build it, and it has locking wheels. My tile saw has a stand and wheels on one end. It works fine. You pick up one end, and wheel it. It came from Harbor Freight.

If I read you correctly, the irid is stretching or pulling? The only thing I can think of is the thin is trying to pull back to 1/4". Can you use more glass, or try doubling it up?

healing a crack

It always happens. I have a 10x16 piece that is 3/4" thick. I wanted to trim it up square before cold working. I guess I got too close to the edge. While cutting, a crack appeared and started across the piece. Can I take it to full fuse and heal the crack, and if so, what type of firing schedul...

hot start

I just got a skutt hot start kiln. I was looking for a small kiln for tests, and small pieces. Most were 300-400 for about a 6"-8". This is just over 500, but takes a 13" shelf, and has a controller. Got it in 3 days, no shipping and it works great.

Just thought I would share.

black pyrex

Hi all. Does anyone know of a source for black pyrex rod in 1/2" and 1"? I want it for feet. I have bought clear from Winship, but they don't know of black.

I sandblasted the rust off the glass. I sanded the wok, heated and recoated. Put the bowl back in, and slumped to 1250 to fire polish. No rust, and a nice satin finish. The only problem is that the clear is not totally clear, and the aventurine is a little matte. Actually for this piece it works nic...

Thanks for the info. I love watching shows of this nature. I am sure if you went through the gallery here on the main page you would get lots of inspiration for future shows with warm glass artists!

mold additives

Hi all. I have been using a simple plaster, silica mold mix with good results. I have read about additives such as fiberglass mesh for bigger molds, and for more durability. What exactly do you add, and in what quantities. Finally where do you get the stuff? By the way, molds would be used for slump...

Hi Bert. I have had the same problem. Sometimes CLR works, sometimes the other products mentioned work. I have had to soak items at times. I have used distilled water as well. I'm thinking that the rocks release some minerals over time, or the combination of dust and dirt settling, and running throu...

shells

Some shells turn to powder, and some remain. Some just a ghost. You can slump, fuse over them on a bed of sand and get some shell design.

wok update

Thanks Tony. I think if I understand you, the frosted look disappears, but it is a matte finish. What I want is for the clear to be clear, or transparent. Matte finish is fine. Is that correct?

wok update

Well, the rust marks will not come off the glass. I redid the wok, and tried a single piece of clear. No marks. Then someone said that maybe the irid down caused the rust to attach. Question now. If I sandblast the rust off, and want to fire polish, can I place it in the wok, and take it to 1250? I ...

I did preheat. I used a torch, heated, sprayed and dried. It was totally dry when it went in the kiln.

wok trouble

Finally tried my new wok. Sandblasted, sprayed with wash. 19" piece of alternating aventurine green, and clear irid. Got a nice even slump, but where the clear contacted the wok, I had rust come through big time. Left big rust marks on the wok, and minor rust on the glass. I assume I need more ...
