Re: Loose abrasives vs. bonded(pads,etc.)

Many people have changed to the bonded abrasives because you can use one or two laps and just change the discs very quickly. Having the loose abrasives requires you to have more machines, usually a dedicated machine for each grit or you spend a lot of time cleaning up when changing from one grit to ...

Re: making cabochon with coin inclusion?

I used to put copper pennies in bottles and paperweights when I had my furnace. I would make a small indentation/cup in the gather then insert the coin and attach a 2nd gather on the cup's edge to encapsulate the coin. For fusers I would try making a small cup shape and then put the copper penny in ...

A good read is "The Principles of Art" by R.G. Collingwood who wrote this in 1923 but still has a lot of relevance to this subject today.

Re: Cutting Very Thick Glass Slabs

you don't say what the thickness of the slabs are. I used to cut slabs that were 1" thick and 12" square in a few minutes with a MK saw and a 10" blade I don't know what you're doing wrong. lots of water , a good saw, and a good blade should do it. I also used to cut large pieces of o...

Dual is required, but it must be surface mix, not premix. I've been using a Nortel minor for many years and now have switched to a Bethlehem Alpha, You also have to have your flame adjusted correctly and work way out in the end of the flame.

Re: Homeowners' Insurance

as long as it is a commercially produced piece of equipment and the service, either gas or electric is done to code and by a licensed individual it should not be problem just as plugging in a 220V stove or gas stove. Risks of fire are not much different although the kiln does get a little hotter on ...

check out the blades at www.lopacki.com . I've used them for years and he has some that are ultra thin and if sawed slowly will give very few chips if any. Dan's prices are very reasonable as well.

Re: Telescope mirrors

casting in boro may not be possible in an electric kiln powered with wire elements. The elements will only go to about 2175 before having serious failures. The boro usually has to be melted to about 2400 min. and some boros need to go hotter. That's why there are few people that do boro furnace work...

It can be done. I met a woman at an art fair about 10 years ago from Florida who used Kokomo exclusively for fusing.. As has been mentioned, test everything before getting too carried away with designs.

Re: I'm looking for info

you can' buy blank bottles, no labels from several bottle suppliers. Some years ago, I had an order of cutting off the tops of 1500 1.75L bottles and purchased blank bottles and then had them decorated with the customer's logo. It might be worth it to save the time and mess.

I warned of this demise of the glass suppliers several years ago, I hope that the artists can endure until other companies can step up and fill the voids left by the problems affecting our art glass community.

Put a metal cap on the end of the teardrop and drill the glass so the metal can be pinned to the glass. then attach the SS cable to a metal loop on the metal part. "Double clamp all the connections to ensure a "safety net" should one fail.

I wonder if Dan ever posted those in any museums. If he didn't he probably should have.
No one or place is exempt.
Dan always said that glass had a memory and remembered everything you do to it or every time you touch it. I still believe he was right about that.

just running a continual fan in the new building will help circulate the air and help with the moisture problem, but as Marty stated a dehumidifier would be best.
