Re: Getting Frustrated

strange things can happen to different glass when it is re-fired several times. It also appears that due to the differences in thickness of the piece that the annealing may have not been sufficient for this slump and how much area of the slumped piece touched the mold. That could cause uneven heatin...

Re: merchant responses to shipping costs

unless you're shipping lots of volume or large shipments, the big parcel services have got it locked in and we are at their mercy. Sometimes you can ship 10 cartons on a pallet by LTL motor freight much cheaper than sending individual cartons. I doesn't seem right that you can get a 20' container fr...

Re: sink mold used for hanging light?

No, but SS is probably better. We used to travel with a dozen metal woks for teaching. I can't remember what they were but not SS. Basically, if it can take the heat it'll work. I slump at 1150. I've been using a standard steel wok for over 10 years and who knows how many items I've slumped in it a...

Re: Polarizing film- annealing- results

yes, some stress in some shapes and items can stay intact for many years. Look at some 19th century paperweights under a stressometer and you'll be amazed that they have hung together for going on 200 years. Some cracked in a few hours, it all depends on many issues.

it may be easier to hire a guard to protect them. If someone wants to destroy something, they'll find a way no matter what you do. sounds like you did everything possible within reason to protect them. maybe conceal a camera with a looping tape nearby to record it when it happens again and then iden...

what you describe willwork, I've stacked up similiar things using custom made "S" hooks. hung them 11-12 high. cable should work well.

Re: Shipping large piece-best way?

I'm curious to see what UPS charges. gas from WI mto Boston should be about $105.00each way. That's $210.00 car renta unless you have access to a car that gets at least 30mpg. Time for a nice road tripto Boston. If the piece isn't worth enough to warrant that cost then just forget it and sell it clo...

Build a crate similar to those used by Spectrum,Bullseye and the other glass companies, but not as thick. line it with foam on all sides and then attach the crate to a pallet with vertical bracing, just like when you receive large sheets of glass form your glass suppliers. I've gotten 100's of 2X4 s...

Re: old timers survey

fusing and slumping was the easy part, I wondered how people that were doing larger casting were actually achieving what they did. As I recall there was an article in Ceramics monthly about 1962-63 that had all the instruction for doing a lost wax casting in glass. I think the "plaster" wa...

I'm curious, how many of the people that post on here were working with fused or cast glass prior to the invention of digital controllers and digital pyrometers and what were your experiences during that time period of not having precise controls and fiber blanket was very rare as an insulation mate...

Re: ANNEALING UNKNOWN float GLASS

I would think you shoud be OK letting it cool down on it's own since there is no combining of other glass and no tricky shapes you're making. when they produce float glass it can go from furnace(2100 degrees) to being put in a crate in less than an hour and if you're not doing any grinding or polish...

Re: The myth of a long slow cool?

some of that is true. if you can get a copy of the discourses that Frank Wooley wrote on the annealing process. viscosity of different glasses and their chemical makeup cAN have a big effect on what can be combined and shape has a lot to due with it. i.e the large telescopes blanks that Corning prod...

Re: Fusing non rated glass.

a lot of regular stained glass will devit very bady when you try to fuse it. Some are under a lot of stress aready because the mixes of are not really compatible with each other but holds together because it so thin and is kept in a flat plane.sometimes sheer surface tension helps hold them together...

I still have some very old Drakenfeld stock that I would like to sell if anyone is interested. I have the following 22-164 pink, 23-034 yellow, 76-191 green, 66335 brown specks 80/140mesh, 29-498 tan, 25-478 green, 27-3359 transparent blue, 22-429 pink. also try scoring and then put in a box and hit it with a sharp flame from a torch. It should give you nice larger pieces.

Have you tired using the silver sharpies and drawing directly on to the glass and then firing it? I use them to sign a lot of work before firing and it seems to hold up well.

Re: Glass grinding with silicon carbide by hand

If you are really picky, you will need separate pieces of glass for each grit as it is very difficult to get all the grit off of the thick plate when you want to switch to a different grit. By doing this you can avoid getting a some deeper scratches after you have tried to achieve a finer polish.
