Re: woven strips of glass--name?

Okay! Cancel this question! I went on the internet and googled "glass weaving" and found all I need, I think.

woven strips of glass--name?

I'd like to play around with a technique that I've never used before and can't come up with anything on the subject search area. It's when you have thin strips of glass and you weave them together. It requires pre-firing and slumping the glass and then you put the strips together. Never thought I'd ...

Re: getting red to strike in a wafer

At 1340 the opal red powder finally turned red enough for my needs. I also tried pimento and tomato reds, which didn't strike very much at 1340. I'm using the wafer on top of glass that has had some powdered glass fired into it already, so the red and the white on the wafer has to be pretty dense. I...

Re: getting red to strike in a wafer

Hmmm....the red powder I am using is the same stuff I used on the original wafers (I buy the big jars). I'll just take a reject wafer and fire it with a regular load. Or e-mail the wafer master himself.

getting red to strike in a wafer

I want use red in a couple of wafers I'm making, but I haven't been able to get it to strike true red yet. I fired them up to 1285 the first time, 1300 the next. Still orange looking. I e-mailed BE and they told me it would only strike at full fusing temperatures but I've gotten red in wafers in the...

Warning! Chinese scam!

I got an e-mail this morning from someone claiming to work for a company that registers domain names in China, saying that they'd gotten a formal application for the use of my business name. If I didn't answer in six days they'd allow this company to use my business name. Oh? A quick search revealed...

Re: Need some kiln recommendations...

In my experience, the oval kilns tend to "smile" (the ends lift up a bit during firing, letting hot air out and cold air in--not good). I'll never buy another.

Re: Lamp worked rondels and other 2D forms

Cynthia, to go back a few posts--how do you press the snipped bits of stringer, instead of putting it into a mold? I'd like to work with some of this technique, but I'd like it as thin and as easy to cut as possible. Thanks! Kate

Re: Kiln Relays

I had a Skutt bathtub kiln and was replacing relays at least annually until I started using a small fan to keep the relay switches cool(er). After that, I didn't change a relay until I sold the kiln a few years later. The kiln was on every day and the folks at Skutt told me it was a "hobby"...

Re: Customers Asking for Discounts

There's a flip side to this. Occasionally I'll give someone a discount when I'm writing up their receipt if they buy from me regularily, or buy a large amount at one time. I've actually had a few people reject my offer of a discount, saying that the work is worth the price I'd asked for. Honest. Doe...

Re: metal bands used in firing?

Thanks so much for the information! I'm just beginning to do more sculptural pieces and this information will be quite useful. I usually don't mind doing a test run-through
before I do a piece, but I really didn't want to risk a metal melt in my kiln. Thanks again, Kate

metal bands used in firing?

I bought 2 of those metal bands that you tighten with a screwdriver from Ace, and they assured me that it was made entirely out of stainless steel. I'm planning on using them to hold a thin sheet of stainless steel in a round shape. I'm not going to fully melt the pieces of glass I'm putting inside ...

Re: photographing wall pieces

Brad, Thanks for the photo. Good work Jody! I tried to photograph a tad bit on the angle, like the photo, but then the image distorted too much. Tried a couple of different lenses, but didn't like the results. The images, for the most part, were photoresist which really need to be viewed head-on. Bu...

Re: Adding cremains to already fused piece?

I've fused a lot of cremains and although they're not for everyone, they can make very comforting pieces. The ashes can be concealed by putting the ashes in the bottom layer of glass, by covering with solid colored glass, by putting a frit design (or mardi gras glass or dichroic) on top of them. Mos...

photographing wall pieces

I usually make pieces that go in stands or are bowls, but I have a bunch of glasswork I'm going to photograph tomorrow that hang on walls in my brother-in-law's photography studio. They're fused glass glued to wood panels, without any of the wood panel showing--no borders. I've taken a few pictures ...

Re: Fish of a different color?

Thanks for sharing! I sometimes glue my glass on top of panels, but often people think they're boxes (even when on a wall) and try to pry them open. The aluminum background would probably stop that. But more importantly, it's a great look. Keep looking for an outlet for those salmon, perhaps in a mo...

Hmmm....tried to post but it got lost, I think, in cyberspace.... Anyway, I live in salmon country too and this time of year is special. Love what you did with the salmon and to be frank, I'm getting a little bored with salmon colored salmon. I have a question about the aluminum--did you keep it fla...

Re: Fish of a different color?

I live in salmon country too, and this time of year is special. Love your take on salmon. Technical question: is the aluminum flat on top of the panel or did you bend the aluminum to fit along the sides too? I'm trying ideas out for mounting glass on panels. Thanks! Kate
