Are all of your layers the same size? Sometimes I do cabs with a smaller square on the bottom to make the dichro round over better, but this stretches and "cracks" the dichro. ( I'm not doing detailed images, though) Also, if the dichro is the middle layer, you might try using thin glass a...

I think $100 is a lot for one small suncatcher, do they get to keep the soldering iron? Part of it probably depends on the area you live in, too. My jewelry classes are 5 hours long and students can make up to 30 pieces in that amount of time. I charge $70 at my place, (materials included) and $100 ...

I have some effetre sheet glass and one thing I've noted is that some of the transparent colors look nearly identical before fusing- they start out kind of a pale yellow and then strike to blood-red, orange-red, or acid yellow after firing. This gets a bit screwy when you have scraps to deal with- I...

I should have rephrased my post to say "a few" instead of "many", that I thought were full of crap... . I wasn't referring to educated intellectual artists statements, but rather to a few specific artists that I know personally- One who paints commercially molded ceramics, and an...

My post was simply intended to compliment Suzan on the her artist's statement... I thought it was very conversational and told her story nicely. If I offended someone in the process, I apologize.

I especially like that it isn't full of "crap" like many that I've encountered... you don't use out-of-reach vocabulary our sound "way out there" just for the sake of sounding mysterious...normal people understand what you're saying and will feel more connected to you when they p...

It would have to be a pretty big yacht to keep your kiln level, huh?

The nigerian lady likes me, too. Too bad she's in such a bind. LOL

So what did you say? LOL. Or did you let it pass in quiet dignity? Geri[/quote] I took a deep breath... then I showed them the super glued before/after pieces and told them that I did them in a kiln... the guy left pretty quickly, and there were a few ladies snickering quietly in the corner. They'd ...

Don't you love it when people come into your booth and tell everyone else there how your stuff was made? This weekend I had a guy come in and tell others he was with (loudly) that he knew all about this stuff and I used a furnace and dropped globs of glass onto TIN FOIL, then put a hook in it while ...

I do much of my jewelry on cards, which I then fit through the slats on sawn-in-half bifold doors. I either hang them from my canopy frame or set them directly on a table- if you're worried about theft, it's a good way to quickly be able to see if something's missing-just look for holes. I think tha...

I've come to love many of the silver stain reactions in my jewelry pieces... I use black as a base, then a black background for the top piece of a pendant, then a smaller piece of something that will react (red, orange, yellow, french vanilla, gold purple). Even though the reactive glass isn't touch...

That's an avenue I had never thought of... I do have to laugh at the thought of a "one woman show"- it sounds like my daily life! My husband is a varsity football coach, so I'm 'widowed' until December with 3 little ones (sometimes 4), a neurotic dog, a load of shows, and my busy season is...

Dani, I'm working on that! Carol, I did these in my 18" jen-ken... You may be able to do tiles in a hot box if you go REALLY slow, but I've never tried anything that big in my quickfire. I have a brand new jen-ken oval kiln sitting in my studio waiting for me to get all of my junk moved out the...

thanks!
They're pretty small, the openings in the mat are each 5"x7", so the actual glass pieces are roughly the size of an index card... The outer frame is 14"x17", I think.

Thought I'd share a new little piece- (even though it's a pretty crummy photo job)

I teach in my studio and at off-site locations... I charge more for the off-site ones to cover travel expenses, then the hosting facility adds in their cut. One thing about teaching in your home (ESPECIALLY if you make a profit) is that you need to purchase a rider on your homeowners insurance to co...

I use the foam mat puzzle squares with an indoor/outdoor gray carpet on top... I agree w/ it paying for itself in saved pieces. In my (limited) show experience, I have found that most shows will allow you to jury in more than one category, which is what I do. I have 2 sets of slides of two separate bodies of work, one for the jewelry category, one for the glass category. I have to pay two jury fees, but only one booth fee. I...
