same way you test which side has the dichroic on. put your fingernail to one surface. if the coating touches your fingernail that's the surface. if there's a gap the thickness of the glass, then it's the other side.

I've never tried this , however, I have READ that you could use an inexpensive coffee grinder for small scale frit making. Anyone else ever heard of that? :?: yes, for a few times. it wears out really quickly. you then have to clean it well and put it back in the kitchen for your spouse to find, an...

So what do I do about it? I only run the venting system during the initial heating through the brittle zone ( I turn it off at about 800F). I don't use it for cool down. I run the vent through a dimmer switch to slow the fan speed down. you probably already know this, but a lot of motors aren't des...

Re: Build a frame around the pattern bar piece?

Well, I am looking for a continuous border with no seams and stacking is the only way I know to get it. I guess Ihave been really lucky, because I have done it successfully probably 15 times before the explosion. I have slowed my schedule down to 200dph ramping up and hope that that solves future p...

The moral for me....is know your kiln, and consider when the problem started and what preceeded that. Thanks for all your input. I am much smarter as a result. Carla working at a computer manufacturer doing customer service, the first question i ALWAYS ask is: if it used to work, what did you change?

Both of the pieces I'm referring to were thick float glass. They both made that "ping" breaking noise from thermal shock, one when subjected to uneven heat (a commercially made, thick float glass table top), the other when subjected to rapid cooling while it was still very hot (probably 2...

deborahbur wrote:How soon can I take my fused or slumped glass out of the kiln? What should the temp be to be safe?
if i don't have to, i let it sit until room temp. if i have to, i open the kiln at 200, and take it out and wrap it in towels at 150.

of course, in the summer, room temp is 115-120.

do a search in the old archives as there's been lots on this in the past.

cutting thick glass can be done with an ordinary cutter, however it's easier with a different cutting wheel. the thicker the glass the wider the wheel angle.

Make sure one of the two holes on the side of the airbrush is plugged. You'll find the plug with extras in the kit. Will it spray water? If not, rotate the wheel on the back top side of the airbrush until it does. If it does spray water, then try a different tip. The turquoise tip works the best wi...

Re: Light shield breaking

Or you could put the vase up on little acrylic feet so it sits off the glass a little. The way you describe what you think is going on seems a little mixed up. I think you're right that the vase is acting as a heat sink and that the smaller vessel allowed more cooling. The key is even cooling versu...

Try light emitting diodes. No energy cost and last 100,000 hours. Look for a regular screw in one used for fire exit lights. The screw in bases come in small and regular bulb size. can you get neon in regular bulb bases? a par30 is a very short lightbulb in the first place, and i don't really want to rewire the socket. also, i don't believe neon is dimmable either.
