It looks like a simple job for a shop that builds custom Hot Rods. They have forming rollers and maybe even a SS source.

You will need to have your pot filled with at least 50% clear plus stick with lighter shades of transparent glass!

Re: TaoFiber - Fiber Paper

I was wondering why Marty said he can't use Thinfire on his Vermiculite shelf. I have been using Thinfire exclusively on 2 different Vermiculite shelves for 15yrs+ with no problems of any kind. It gives a very smooth surface underside (onetime use only). :D

Glass/Cash Survey

In the just published "New Glass Review#39" there is quite an extensive survey of $ earnings for those in various fields involving glass eg: artists, business, industry, etc. The detailed summary report will be interesting to many here on this board. My initial take away is: this, generall...

Re: Hairline 'crack'

At what temp did you clearly see the crack? It is not going to be "Healed" (refused) if it was less than about 1350 on the downside of the firing ramp. If it started by a brick was it stuck to brick?

Re: Slumping issues

You state that there was no number code on the glass. I do not recognize this as a "96" color... Because there is so much Spectrum out there that is not tested fusable I would suggest this glass is not "96".

Re: Whiting as texture mold

I have mixed whiting with water to a thick cream consistency and applied it to coated kilnshelf with a cake decorating icing sqeezebag to form tree images. Sets to a hard enough image to set 1/4" glass on top. (coat with kilnwash before placing glass on top) You should probably experiment!

Re: Is it possible to fix a broken shelf

You will not be able to repair it so it can be lifted in and out of the kiln in one piece. I suggest instead you level and assemble it (the shelf) in place in the kiln, cover with 1/8" or 1/4" fibreboard or fill cracks with Kaolin then build your glass artwork in the kiln on this assembled...

Re: thicker and thinner together- ok?

I have hung several panels with 2 cables or chains over many years similar in size and weight you are stating. I drilled 3/16" dia. holes in 1/2" to 3/4" from each edge. Always had good results... I use the spherical diamond drills... drill holes under water.. supported on underside.....

Re: Recommendations for bench grinder?

Do to the water needed for grinding this is NOT a reasonable approach. I would recommend you consider a wet belt sander to expand your capabilities. With a variety of belt grits you can grind and polish perfect bowl rims (square, round, oval, etc.) plus numerous other applications. A WBS will allow ...

Re: How do I full fuse keeping the original shape...

there is also the flip and fire option... if the new square piece is placed against the shelf with the original composition inverted on top it should pretty much retain it's square shape when fused in.. then you will have to re-flip and again refire!

Re: Bullseye glass shrinkage after fusing

Yes that would also work if you don't have a WBS. An extra 1/2"of base glass on each of the 4 sides would be easy to score and remove.

Re: Bullseye glass shrinkage after fusing

Shrinkage is based on volume of glass, not manufacturer... If the glass is not a uniform 2 layers thick you will get shrinkage! You have a few factors to deal with eg: top temp, top temp. hold time, amount and location of second layer design...... Your safest bet is to fire oversize and grind/polish...

Re: Troubleshooting

It should not make any difference what's going on outside (rain, cold etc.) It's what's going on inside the kiln that counts! If all pieces migrated toward centre then I suggest you have some kind of vibration going on. Put just a few pieces back in and run a monitored test firing.. try to figure ou...
