Re: Ode to kiln controllers...
Electronic controllers have allowed fusing to be easily accessible to 1000's. without them I doubt nearly as many would be involved. I wonder what will happen to all those when the fused glass manufacturers cease to exist. how many will make their own glass? prior to the late 70's we had no compatib...

Re: not quite a fused glass question, ? about beadmaking eye protection
depends if you are working soft glass or boro. Boro is much harder on your eyes than soft glass. the size of items you are working on I think has an effect on your eyes as well. Philips and Aura are 2 good manufacturers of these glasses, call and talk to them. They'll have some things to recommend.

Re: Kilnbuilding
IMHO: better to buy a used ceramic kiln and get started, many times you can find some of these on craigslist for under $150. buying good insulating fire brick isn't cheap. you can get a set point controller and pyrometer for another $50. that is the cheapest way to get started and then upgrade as yo...

Re: What type of stainless steel can be used in a kiln?
I have used a regular steel wok for many years. I just coat it well with kiln wash. it will flake some but can usually be brushed off with no problem. I've also used all types of stainless, including stainless exhaust pipes, barware, cheap mixing bowls, grill parts, etc. I also have a large drop out...

Re: Advice on buying a new 120V kiln :(
all kilns require maintenance and repair. just like automobiles. if you're not ready to accept that, then find another media. Everything has it's limits and can be problems depending upon their usage. As I stated before they are pieces of mechanical equipment just like autos and each has it's own se...

Re: Need some kiln recommendations...
That's kind of like buying a car. There are a lot of good manufacturers and different models. Everyone has their own preferences and set of requirements. I have a friend who just traded her 12 year old car on a new one and wishes he had the old one back. Look at a lot of the kiln dealers and see wha...

Re: jewelry pricing
some higher end jewelry stores put a small,1/4" high sign in very legible black and white in front of or next to the items. Even if it's $5000 or $20. Label it with price, but do it very tastefully, not handwritten on a hand tag or a sticker. add some class to it and make it easily read.

Re: Olympic Kiln Repair Question
if you can heat up the inner coil with a torch, and pull it while it's hot, you can stretch the coil without breaking it and then force more of it thru the ceramic piece to connect to.

Re: Advice on buying a new 120V kiln :(
check your thermocouple first. Thermocouples definitely have a life span and it sounds like yours may be about up. Type K thermocouples are notorious for this. If it's over 2 years old replace it. the other thing it could be is an element and those should not be very expensive, check with Duralite f...

Re: silver plated trays as slumping molds
try sandblasting the silver off and then prepare with kiln wash, then you don't risk contaminating your kiln from the silver.

I've polished 1000's of pieces with cerium oxide on an old Somaca lap wheel. I've also done it as you mentioned with a piece of float. The most important part is to make sure you go thru all the grits and get all the scratches out before going to the next finer grit. If you get evenly ground to 600 ...

Re: drilling hole chipped irid coating
I have used a spade shaped bit and drill until it just barely comes thru the surface of the opposite side, then turn the piece over and drill from the other side. I've drilled 1000's of holes this way and have only had a few that cracked because I was not careful to support the glass evenly. I almos...

spend the big bucks and make yourself some new body parts. I find at my age most of what I have left is worn out.
