Re: Kiln Relays

Try to always have your controller several feet from your kiln and use SCR electronic relays with large heat sinks and possibly a ccooling fan. I went thru several SCR's till I put a small repurposed computer on the unit to cool the SCR. I been using the same SCR now for over 10 years with no proble...

Re: Setting up a sandblaster

Tony: good info.I've been using a TP cabinet and blasters for many years. I use their siphon and pressure pot. My only complaint is that if you don't use any of the different systems on a regualr basis, it requires a fair amount of maintenance to keep them operating properly. The moisture trap is of...

Re: Mica powders

Question: are these actual mineral micas or manufactured. I used to actually go get mica out of the ground, crush it and then use it in some of my blown wares. BTW: there's a lot of it near Penland, I have to admit it was a real mess as it stuck to all the tools, blocks and everything else. After th...

Re: ponderable?

as I understand it is the transfer of covalency of certain moleules that allow this changing of colors to occur. The transfer of additional energy/heat allows the molecules to change thus making different colors, There are some glases that I think are chromium based that can actually strike from blu...

no one's mentioned the work that Libensky did on annealing and cooling castings. He put out a lot of charts on this subject.

Re: sink mold used for hanging light?

I've had local potters make many large molds for me from either a porcelain body or stoneware and just have them bisque fire it. We had several style of sinks molds made this way and many times they are open to bartering for their clay pieces. Be sure and kiln wash the surface well.

Been doing that for over 35 years. no problems just have to understand how to make your equipment do what you want.

Re: Indiegogo?

check with local carpet stores, they may have remnants that are odd patterns that they would be happy to give you. Free is always good. People can share what they need, I have done workshops with as many as 25 women and only used 5 glass cutters and the same number of running pliers. If you shop aro...

Re: Does glass always need fire polishing when fused in a mo

I would interject here that fire polishing can be done on many items with the use of gas fired torches. Many factories have "glazing" machines that have been used for many years to flame polish a lot of their blown and pressed wares. If you are so inclined you can make ring burners that ca...

Re: Indiegogo?

In the future have the class make an item or 2 that they can auction off as a fund raiser. My wife did that with her class on a similar project and several parents got into a bidding war and it raised a fair amount of $ that was then donated to the school and the project. In the meantime what do you...

order a 6"x6" or larger optical crystal cube from China and have it laser engraved inside. Then get optic clear or slabs of optical crystal and adhere them to the outside and build it up to make a large cube. Otherwise it will not get anywhere close to the look you're trying to achieve. I ...

Re: Wet belt sander

most of the older sanders were heavier in construction than any newer ones and in my mind had better bearings. They were built during the time of real battleships and hence these were of the same construction. $ spent on equipment in those days was not as crucial as it seems to be today. People want...

probably blown from boro on a lathe. inside is blown first then it inserted into a closed off piece of large tubing with a flat end. Then the lips are attached together and melted so they are smooth. The use of a scientific glassblowers lathe with the proper torches would facilitate this well. Origi...

Re: How to polish a casted sculpture

there used to be a service in Tiffin. OH. that did acid polishing on customers pieces of glass. There are still some other sources outside of the US that does this type of work. It takes a very specialized set up to do this safely.
