Re: Health warning
Although asbestos is bad, keep in mind that only a small percentage of people who were exposed to it on a daily basis for years developed any issues. As with anything it's the dose that makes the poison. You are breathing in toxins all day long, unless your exposure gets to a certain threshold does ...

Re: Glass surface dulling
I would guess it's just good old Devitrification. I'm not sure there is much you'll be able to do about it as kokomo is not formulated to be ran through a kiln. ( I think, could be wrong) Some stained glasses will almost disintegrate when taken to fuse temps. I'd suggest trying with either Bullseye ...

quote from PAragon website A relay in my digital kiln fails at around 1800 degrees F. When the kiln cools off, the relay operates again. answer Your relay has been damaged by heat. As the temperature rises in the switch box, the relay fails because the electromagnet that closes the contacts inside t...

CHANGE THE RELAY!!!!
It's like $20.00 I almost guarantee that's the problem.
They don't always just break...they malfunction at high temperatures.
Don't believe me???

Re: Advice on buying a new 120V kiln :(
I would think that a 120v kiln would only have one element. So your element is either going to work or not, I can't imagine it working till a certain temperature then stopping. I have had mechanical relays stop working once they get too hot. Once the kiln cools off, the relay also cools and will wor...

Re: Blaster Question
I don't have any gloves at all on my cabinet, I cut the removed the hands long ago. I have a ground wire in the arm hole that my arm rests against to deal with the static electricity. The heavy duty gloves are really only necessary if you are blasting at 90psi with a siphon system. If you have suffi...

Re: Blaster Question
Hello Jim, I have bought several HF type pots over the years (we don't have HF in Canada but we have Princess Auto which sells the same pots). In my opinion they work just fine, I have changed them up a bit and put smaller diameter houses on them. I used to use 3/8" rubber air line hose but hav...

Re: Embossing float 10 mm glass
Looks good Victoria, Rosanna is correct about the devit and venting. As for low iron, there are many brands (starphire, krystal klear, ultra-white, optiwhite, ultra clear) of low iron and each is slightly different. You likely won't know which you have unless you get it direct from the manufacturer....

Re: Embossing float 10 mm glass
Devit with float is much worse with thinner glass. I do not have ANY issue with devit on 6mm or thicker glass. I ALWAYS fire tin side down. Anything thinner is a nightmare, I won't waste my kiln time trying to fire anything thinner than 6 mm. I am one of those that fires HOT and has little or no hol...

Kiln Building
Hello Bert, Kevin and anyone else who's knowledgeable regarding fiber board kiln building. I am going to build another fiber kiln, larger this time likely 4" x 8" I am researching buying the board to build it, and can get some kaowool HP board close to home. 20-23 lbs cft I asked him if th...

Re: Insurance responsibility at exhibit?
How have people done is actually claiming on insurance. I've given up on paying for insurance on shipping as the companies seem to question the value of anything? Then they blame you for the way it was packed, they deny deny deny responsibility. Do people ACTUALLY get paid from the insurance compani...

Re: Kiln Relays
I have three SSR's running my large kiln, the relays are close to ten years old, I have a smaller kiln with two relays that is 6-7 years. These both are fired almost daily and I have never replaced any of the relays. I also have a smaller kiln with mechanical relays that is hardly ever used and the ...

Re: Setting up a Sandblaster - Compressor Size
I don't think they require much maintenance, I change the oil in mine MAYBE once a year and I use mine for a hours a day, most days. They recommend changing the oil more regularly but I don't bother. My current compressor has lasted for over 10 years being used and abused. I have a small oiless comp...

Re: Setting up a Sandblaster - Compressor Size
Those are both "oil less" compressors, these are REALLY noisy. They also are designed to only run for 15 min tops out of 30 mins. They NEED to stop and cool off regularly or they will overheat and wear out really fast. Oiled compressors are designed to run for much longer times without iss...

Re: Compressor recommendations?
There are some questions this thread raises for me: Why is 220V not a readily available alternative here? For all the money that's being spent on equipment, is an electrical upgrade to 220V in order to maximize the investment possible? I upgraded my primary service and ran a 220V line for <$2000 wi...
