Re: What not to do

Don't give up on the piece Dana,
Need to find a useful function for it..
Maybe a downspout receptor, or a wall mounted mail holder.

Re: Seam with white residue

Borax is the flux. If you are using washing powder borax there may be additives that leave a residue. I would not be washing with borax in any case. Been doing this for many years Steve. Find the 20 mule team borax method works as well as the commercial product. Have no problem with any residue. Ba...

Re: silver and glass

Yes, but it does depend on the thickness of the silver and the glass it is fused with (reactivity)
I screen print silver slip all the time on to BE1401.
Difficult to cap.....yellows.

Re: missing peep plug

Been firing all my kilns for years without plugs.

If you want to realize how little heat escapes, fire your kiln and hold your hand near the peep hole when it is hot. You will feel very little heat.

Re: Earring Bails or Small Rings for Earring Wires

This is a little off topic, but for glue on Sterling bails, you can use necklace "plaques". These are the little (about 1/2 inch flat thingies available at most findings vendors. Also come in gold filled. Very inexpensive as they are quite thin. Far far less expensive than the earring bail...

Re: Papyros, Kiln Liner and Bullseye Thinfire papers

I am using more Papyrus lately. If we are firing in our larger kilns for multiple fusings (as in classes), will use and reuse papyrus. Secret to reusing it is to let it cool completely. This can also be done with thinfire, but it doesn't hold together as well.

Re: photo decals - black and white

Best I can tell, this is the standard decal paper available in many places including our web store (see below). Many canon printers do have the iron oxide in the toner, but some do not. You are pretty safe with HP black only printer Note: you still get the "sepia" color, also known as rust...

Re: Ordinary powder in place of enamel powder?

Powder frit does not have near the pigment to create decent color unless layered quite thick.....Much much thicker that a standard screen print can place. Enamels are made to be used in relatively thin layers.

Re: Fast-cooling when painting and firing ?

For the Newbies, remember that size does count. The above discussion is very conservative since it is oriented toward larger pieces. If you are fusing pieces below 2x2 inches (pendant sized), the rules change. You have much more flexibility. I open my kiln wide at top temp, and crash to 900. Close t...

Re: Ben & Vanessa's Newcomer Questions and Endless Posts

Wissmach does make a 96, and yes they do make their own glass..
I only use their 90, and I have never had a devit problem with it.

Just an observation. Probably 1/4 to 1/2 or the people I teach come from a stained glass background.

Re: Your favorite website for buying fusible glass and why?

Several factors would weigh into your decision as to which site to buy from Where are you (shipping)? How much do you need to buy ? Can you buy full sheets? What type of glass do you want? Several of the advertisers above are excellent sources. I buy a lot of smaller pieces. A 12x12 of a color is fi...
