The pot melts are also terracotta and are not kiln-washed and don't stick, thus the question. I also fire in clay molds, albeit shallow, that are not kiln-washed and my glass doesn't stick. Of course, this is at low slumping temps. However, the pot melts are quite hot. Yet, the glass still doesn't s...

Hmmm. The thought occurs to me that one could do a pot melt right down into the flower pot tray. If the flower pot isn't kiln-washed, is it necessary to kilnwash the drip tray? Just curious.

I think you're right, Paul.... even if I don't want someone to use my name, as long as the statement is fact (and, in some cases, even stated opinion), there's nothing I can do about it. It's such a fine line.... I do think Judith's original post is an example of stretching things a bit far, don't y...

And, you know what? .... here's a basic. Be nice to your students. I've seen teachers (and had a few myself) who had some crazy belief that they could build character or skills by abusing their students in some way... either by being tough on them or embarassing them in front of people or any number...

And Erik has pointed out another way our lives can be invaded.... ! And our rights trampled. If you can follow these instructions, so can someone else on your website and for less justifiable reasons. Sometimes I think doing business on the internet is like setting up shop in a war zone. Yikes! For ...

Thanks for posting this, Phil.... another part of the Big New Nightmare is incorrect information haunting you and no recourse to set the record straight! The feeling of helplessness is so incredibly frustrating. Judith is experiencing it, you have felt it, too. It is maddening! Because the laws are ...

I'm not sure I agree with that, Bert. That's like saying I need to know how to program a computer to use one. I don't think I need to be a scientist to be a good glass artist.... it's probably more useful for me to be a good designer and craftsman. I can take the fusing and annealing instructions on...

More about teachers

The G.A.S. voting thread shifted a bit into conversation about good teaching.... and lack thereof. I thought I'd shift that thread to a new heading and plop it here to post my query. I think we all agree that folks who take a class in anything, then hang out their teaching shingle the next weekend d...

What if it's not compatible?.... I ask this because I still wonder how regular non-art industrial glasses can be recycled. Surely those glass are hopelessly incompatible and yet they are all re-melted together. And produce a stable new end-product. So, is it a function of the high heat that overcome...

... and lest we all blindly think that democracy is the best form of government, let me simply state that I believe benevolent monarchy works best! And it seems to me a worthy goal for anyone interested in G.A.S. would be as member of the nominating committee which, as Pete points out, wields ...

>>Your Private life, on the other hand, is yours to keep (maybe a good idea). This sentence struck a cord with me because of the research I've been doing in the past few months which includes invasion of privacy. You are mistaken if you believe your personal life is private in this country. Almost e...

Most of us know how boards and nominating committees work. It's also quite usual to have more than one candidate for each position presented to the voting body, particularly in thriving organizations with involved members. Am I to understand that there is only one candidate for each position? (I mis...

I question whether using someone's name without their permission is illegal. In researching defamation of character, I discovered it is very difficult to sue someone for saying, "I think he's a crook". That phrasing just makes it my opinion, and the burden of proof of damage is on the obje...

When organizations are begging for folks, it's often because they are really bad organizations, Cheryl! If G.A.S. has people begging to be in key positions and more nominations than they know what to do with, that bodes well for them. It's something to consider. On the flip side of my own argument, ...

This one hits close to home for me as I'm in the midst of pursuing a lawsuit. I've spent an enormous amount of time thinking about the pros and cons of legal action. Most of us try to avoid this sort of thing, speculating that the many costs will far outweigh any benefit we receive. I still haven't ...

Marty, I think you should also copyright the act of praying to the kiln gods. You could make a substantial chunk of change off those who spend more time imploring than actually producing a decent fused piece. Not that it could ever happen to me. Ha! You could be a rich man. My percentage on this ven...

How are nominees chosen? Is there a nominating committee that solicits interested parties far enough in advance for warmglass to have made a selection? Can we have more info so we can think up a good action plan.... for this year as well as future years?

PS Steve, the bowl is gorgeous. Also, there's a great demo of cutting that rim at Patty Gray's website, in case you haven't checked it out. Thanks, Patty, for sharing all that good stuff.
