Re: Sandblast Resist

Anchor makes rubber resist that can stretch to fit a contour better than vinyl. The downside is that you can't precut the stencil. You'll have to cut it after its applied to the glass. You can find it in sandblasting supply shops.

Re: kiln side elements not working

Hi Arnold, Brad and Tony - I have used my multimeter ( with care ) and determined that no power is getting to my side elements, and made sure power is coming into the kiln ok. Therefore you are correct that it is the relay that needs replacing. I will order one tomorrow, and am confident I can inst...

Re: Bullseye Being Investigated by Oregon DEQ

To be fair, the amount of arsenic and cadmium discharged by Bullseye's manufacturing process is well within the limits allowed by the permit issued to them by the DEQ. There appears to be a disconnect between the amount the DEQ allows the plant to discharge and what is considered safe. Hopefully, th...

Sounds like a failed relay.

Buy a pair and replace them both.

Re: Stainless Steel for molds?

Beam deflection increases as a cube of the beam length, so it's important to place the supports (fire bricks) as close to the glass as possible. In the image above, there's probably 25% of the length that does nothing to support the glass, but it increases deflection by about 2.4 times.

Re: Stainless Steel for molds?

Shawn,

Ask for 316 Stainless. It has higher temperature resistance than other stainless steels.

I've never seen spalling with any of my SS molds, only discoloration.

These are lovely, Les. Do you have any photos of the pickup? I'm havin a tough time visualizing the transition from color bar to hollow vessel.

Thanks

Re: Cutting curved glass

Sandblasting would be easy, you just need to put something in the bottle to keep the abrasive from hitting the opposite side when you break through.

A core drill would also work if you could totally submerge the bottle in water.

Why don't you just print a negative image of the mask? Then you can pour the refractory into it and not worry about burning out the plastic.

Re: Evenheat with Rampmaster 2.. should I buy it?

The 14-6 is indeed a glass kiln and should be great for a beginner. The Rampmaster 2 is Evenheat's controller for both glass and ceramic kilns.

Re: angle grinder without water supply?

A lot of people use them inside large, plastic storage tubs to contain the spray. Then you only need enough water to cover the glass.

Brad,

Can you create a button elsewhere that duplicates the function?
Or maybe we have to just bookmark it.

I think you'll be fine... There should be minimal changes to the glass by holding at the annealing temperature for a long period. Now if you held a fusing temperature for such a long period, I would expect some adverse effects.

I can see how an acid wash might work with clear, borosilicate glass, but I would think the sulfuric acid would also react with iron or copper in the base glass, possibly striking the surface to a different color.

Re: Sandblaster Foot Pedal

Foot pedals are usually only available for siphon blasters. That's not what you want for a pressure pot. Glastar used to sell the foot pedal and valve that they use on their pressure pot separately, but I don't see it listed on their website. You might give them a call and ask. Rayzist sells their v...
