About reactives - in BE glass
Hello everybody, Most of the reactions of the 'reactives' generate kind of black or grey borders on the point of the connection between the 2 glasses connected. I know that there are some reactions that create different colors, like connecting one of the greens [forgot which one] with white creates ...

Re: MESH MELT
Thank you so much Brad and Mary Lou, I shall certainly benefit from your advices. Do you think that copper wire will also be OK? Will it stand the temp. of mesh melt - i.e. 1700 degrees? [927 centigrade] This is so helpful. I am planning a thorough study on 'stains' and staining the glass, so it is ...

MESH MELT
Is it possible to do mesh melt thru chicken wire?
Is it safe enough?
[i.e. the wire will not melt in the kiln?]
Thanks,
Havi

LIQUID GLASS................CMC.............Alternatives
Hi everybody, I want to try doing some liquid glass. Could not find preparation instructions on the archives [perhaps I did not seek properly] However, found later instructions in La Londe's book. Fine. I have at home methyll celuslose powder - I understand that it is NOT CMC , am I right? The conta...

Re: HELP - Picking the right kiln
Few years ago I read here, when someone asked the same question - people told him [her?] what do you think you will be doing 5 years from now. Buy a kiln that will accomodate that too. My 2 penny - if you want to do casting - buy a deep kiln - consider the size of the mold you will have to put insid...

Re: 'OTHER' MEANS OF POLISHING GLASS
Dear Jeff, Believe it or not, I read about your method in Morganica's blog - linked thru her to yours, called the company in USA, and had them ship me 3 tubes of this clear sheild. Crazy, but true. [the shipment cost me much more than the tubes... ] Thanks for the detailed info. I also like th...

'OTHER' MEANS OF POLISHING GLASS
Hi all, I really hope you are not suffocating in the heat we are experiencing here. Just praying that summer will be over. Gets worse from one year to the other  I know that I can polish glass either by fire polishing [ to whatever dgree of polishing I want the shine to be] or by grinding and ...

Re: rust on glass from reciprolap
rociprolap. If there is rust, a mild abrasive will remove it. Don't operate the rociprolap with rust on the tray--it'll exacerbate the rust problem you already have, it'll get rust on the glass, and it may also interfere with the grinding/polishing action. 1. I use an industrial vacuum cleaner to c...

Re: buying a stand alone controller
I use a more developed model of BENTRUP, and I am very happy with it! the model is DC 405/30 I can compare, as I have an Orton on my Jen Ken 24" , and had a more limited Bentrup on my other kiln. It was not enough for me, it had only 8 segments and very miserable. I think the model was 8/60.......

Re: My kiln side elements
Thanks Jim and Seachange.... I am very grateful for your responses. You are very lucky to have such a helpful hubby, this is really good help and encouragement. However, in my circumstances, it seems that Jim's alternative is better for my situation. But its good to know that there is the other opti...

Re: BORAX
THanks a lot, guys [and dolls... ] You always come up with good advices and experience. From what you say, I think I shall continue using my 'spray A' which has lived with me forever, and use the borax [perhaps] when I run out of this spray A. At least I have some, and learnt how to use it. I...

My kiln side elements
Hello dear friends, Got another question for you My Jen Ken kiln is 24" squarish, about 17" deep, with side elements. And of course, elements at the top. I can not separate the conteroll over them, one switch to turn on or off. I asked my kiln electrician to separate the controll over the ...

Re: BORAX
Thanks to all! I am very grateful for your responses, and the bother you took to search Borax on google - I should / could have done it myself  I read about 'bumps and roughness' is it typical to borax? Will it always happen? However, CaN I use Borax on colored glass too? Many thanks again Havi

BORAX
Hi all, I finally got Borax from an Israeli ceramicist. It has been a long time with her, and is now in chunks, not in powder. Is this borax good for use on glass? How would I use it? Should I make it powder and then - what? sprinkle on the glass? Or should I melt it in some liquid? which liquid wou...

Re: Bubbles.
I consider air bubbles a very nice and interesting part of a design in glass. It seems to me to enhance the 'glassiness' of glass. I have been working on air bubbles for more than 3 years trying to create many effects with them. Also, make air bubbles inside colored glass. I made glass sculptures ki...
