and I thought the economy was bad

I just started purchasing from a new jewelry findings distributor last December and have spent about $500 with them so far. When I started using one type of the findings, I noticed the silver plating was starting to bubble, probably due to poor cleaning of the base metal. I contacted the distributor...

How to take photos

I found this article about an inexpensive way to photograph knives and thought much of the information also applies to glass objects.

Some of these look similar to your image. I did not look at all of them.

Thought you might get some ideas from the formulae used to create these stone effects.

Re: shank for glass buttons: metal, glass or plastic?

Ed Hoy sells glass button shanks which you can attach with Devcon Two Ton epoxy. You might want to use the five-minute formula which has a shorter working time but also sets more quickly and dries clear. I just made about 100 buttons for a friend to use as the flower centers for her fabric flowers. ...

Re: Lap Grinder problem

I have one that looks just like it. It will only hold on a perfectly flat surface and for only a very short while when it loses suction completely. I tried Gorilla duct tape which works great for me for most applications. Once it got wet, it also lost adhesion. I finally bought a roll of the $50 wet...

Re: Kilns

I have a 24" JenKen that I purchased in 1997 and it has been used extensively for the last 10 years. I do not have any rust on the metal, and I have only replaced the heating elements once about 5 years ago. The relays failed about the same time, so those were also replaced. My kiln has lived i...

Here is how to get one at Ed Hoy:

If you want to see others, just go to their website and click on "create account" or something similar. Some companies used to require monthly minimums as well.

Re: Your favorite website for buying fusible glass and why?

Hi, Shelley. The answer to your question depends on a lot of criteria. Some of those factors are what COE you are using, do you have and want to support a local business, what are you planning to make (jewelry, plates, paintings, etc.), how much do you plan to purchase, regular glasses or dichroics,...

Re: Safety relating to thin fire kiln shelf paper

Main ingredients in Thin Fire Paper are Cellulose, Aluminum Hydroxide, fiber glass, organic binders. It is predominately a nuisance dust and an irritant. Regarding the Fiber glass – the jury is out on toxicology but would be a good idea to wear a P95 respirators (cheaper than P100, less breathing r...

Re: Devit Problem with BE

Hi, Cynthia. I use paper and also coat my shelves with kilnwash. However, I only coat them once about every five years unless I have spillage which is the reason they are coated at all. Perhaps Guy does the same.

Havi, here is a link to a search of the Bullseye website about firing striker glass. Some of the colors require a slow firing for the color to fully appear:

Re: Jewelry adhesive advice

I completely agree with you about the runny epoxy, it's really aggravating. I'll check out Barry's tutorial on E6000. I'm happy to use it because I can buy it anywhere; the Epoxy 330 needs to be ordered, another con. Question? is resist tape different from masking or blue tape? Thanks so much! JaYi...

Re: Jewelry adhesive advice

I am with Dana. No problems with E6000 as long as the glue is fresh, the surfaces roughened, and then cleaned (with a solvent like acetone or alcohol, never a window cleaner). I use strips of a resist tape to hold the findings in place until the glue has completely dried. It doesn't take much to kee...

Re: Website

It is pretty much a given anymore, but you need to keep the image sizes small so they load quickly. One other pet peeve I have is mouse-trapping which is when a website disables the back buttom function making it more of a nuisance to return a previous web address. A variation of this to loads multi...

Re: Gluing Transparent coloured glass to white board?

Richard, "transparent" glues is a misnomer. Those glues are "clear", but unless you cover the entire backside of whatever you are glueing, you will still be able to see the spots of glue. I learned this while making clear earrings with embellishments attached with UV glue which w...

Re: Resizing bracelet

Gail, if your friend can contact the artist who made the bracelet, they may be able to do an exchange for a bracelet that fits properly. I think most of us do not want a customer to own a piece of our work which is not right for them and can be exchanged for something that is. I do think your friend...

Re: Thinfire residue

Hi, Alice. The only solution I have found is to not use Thinfire. Pre-fire it, vent it, clean your glass to the ultra-sanitary level, etc. and you still won't be able to predict when it will cause hazing, scum, whatever you choose to call it. Thinfire is an endless discussion topic on this board. Mo...
