Oh, the good old days of screw cap baby food jars. I only have one left. Today's jars use a rubbery friction cap which is not as good as the old ones, IMO. I'm always on the lookout for jars since I'm an incurable packrat. Less than a year ago I bought (600) 4 oz. plastic jars on eBay. Then, more re...

Thanks for the best laugh I've had in a week.

I didn't see my favorite; Boar's Head White Wine Mustard jar. I also love those little pimento jars.

I don't know about tack fusing AFTER the slump but I very often will tack AND slump.

Why not tack fuse BEFORE the slump?

I've said it before, that is a fabulous bowl, I love it!

When you cut the rims you had to cut one relief score to break out the center, right? Did that cut heal up when fired or is it still noticable?

Just got back to town. Spent the entire last week without the internet. I guess it's good to see if you're addicted or not. The two melts were as identical as I can make them. The hole size was the only change. Barbara was correct, the shelf is tilted to get a non-rondel look. I learned it in Roger'...

My microwave..

Tony, I just looked to be sure. Our microwave oven has buttons marked, "Popcorn", "Dinner Plate", etc. These are preprogrammed and obviously can't work for every popcorn or dinner plate put in the oven. I doubt that our microwave is any different than all the others on the "...

What does artistic merit have to do with sales?

Amy, I don't market what I make but I am willing to sell/trade it. Are you saying that I should be prevented from selling a piece, single sheet or not, for such a ridiculous price because it will hurt your sales? In America that just doesn't fly. That's like telling the Ford dealer he can't have a y...

What does it matter?

You sound like a bunch of evangelical fundamentalist preachers that are more concerned with saving other's soul than with saving their own. What does it matter if someone wants a to buy a kiln so they can make a sink. They'll either make one and be happy or they'll have a mess and wish they hadn't t...

Pot melts & hole size

For those considering or already playing with pot melts I hope this helps a little to show how hole size is important. Below is a picture of two small pot melts. They were done identically except one had a 3/8" hole and the other a 1/2" hole. Please try to ignore the shadows on them, there...

Separate issues

Tony, I think we may be talking about separate issues. When I mentioned that Moje teaching a class of beginners how to cut glass, kilnwash a shelf, and do those basic things that are the first steps in fusing was a misfit I was concerned with credential requirements and matching teacher with student...

It's the studio's job

It is nearsighted to look at just the teacher and their credentials. The success/failure of a class comes from matching the teacher with the students. Beginning students don't need Klaus Moje and the class would likely be a total failure. Whereas, many of us could teach a basic class in such trivial...

I have not had the Spectrum red opal turn color at full fuse. It stays bright red. For example, I used it for the nose on my clown mag and it was fired to fusing twice.

Motivation

Why a person teaches will determine their attitude on this subject. If the primary motivation for teaching is to promote and advance the subject/art then the teacher will be delighted that the students pass on what they have learned and improve upon what was taught. For this teacher, seeing the stud...

I have had success airbrushing with Ferro 80 683 (Glycol ether, denatured alcohol & cellulose ether) thinned with alcohol and with gum arabic in water. Both go on even, dry hard and fire glossy.

Are the 683 ingredients the same as Klyrfire?...............Jim

Thanks again- you guys are so patient with this newbie. You share so freely. Jim, what proportions are you using with glycol med. and alcohol and gum arabic with water? Check to see if a piece of material has fallen down into the blade cover. If even a small piece gets in there it will jam the motor if it isn't running. I usually take the blade cover off and clean it out when I'm finished. I have also just turned the hose on and directed it into the area to flush i...
