the melt was composed of some clear with black threads in it and a bit of confetti; some black; some salmon; some white; and a handful of light bronze and clear pieces the size of peas. the colors blended to produce mostly black. the top surface is black, and the bottom has a more interesting appear...

i agree with the others' opinions. sounds like a dirty edge from grinding to me. the temps are probably OK. i usually give a cold kiln about 20 or 30 min to heat up to 500F and evaporate any Klyr Fire, then i go AFAP to 1500 or by whatever looks right, somewhere around 1500+. i never get edge proble...

Pot Melt Firing Schedule
i've set up a melt in the big kiln, and shelf has about 20 coats of BE kw on it. broad pot, not very tall, good-sized hole, filled with variety of scraps. this is my first attempt. thought i had kept a schedule from a thread, but can't find it in my file nor in archive. i am thinking of: 300 dph to ...

stainless steel ring mold - separator advice
i am finally putting together the glass for one of the SS rings i got from Matt Hoppes. i'll coat it with wash, but i want to confirm something else ... if i line the inside with fiber paper, should i use it pre-fired or unfired? i happen to have some previously fired from another project. i recentl...

Scott Chaseling at Leo Kaplan, NY NY
got the catalog today for Scott Chaseling's show at Leo Kaplan Modern in NY ... this is a really great catalog, mostly photos, not much text (who wants to read about it, anyway? let's SEE the stuff.) Mainly roll-ups with painted feature area. catalog only $10, too. for those of you who like to pick ...

the glass pulls in where you're casting the channel because it's thinner there than elsewhere. i like that indentation myself ... i put a little knot on each side of the pendant in that indented area, which makes the pendant on a cord look more finished. if you want absolutely straight sides, no ind...

i've seen something perhaps similar to what you're talking about, as a bowl design. see http://www.hudsonbeachglass.com/serving.htm. i've bought some of their pieces at a gallery here, and can testify that when they have good lighting on them, they are So Fine. i can't tell you how to achieve what y...

i got the powder, and read the literature. it seems this stuff is fierce and relatively dangerous. my plan is to mix it up with hot water, as directed, and put it into a tub with a lid so i can control evaporation. i'm thinking something like a larger RubberMaid tub, larger than a big lasagna. initi...

Viennese pliers
i bought a pair of viennese pliers a few years ago, and i don't know what i had in mind. i don't know what these are for, to be truthful, and i've never used them. someone told me they were to nibble away at the edge of glass -- does that mean after glass has been scored, like to even up the edge of...

i think the surgical steel issue is highly misunderstood by many people. they think it is non-reactive, which is false. it's non-reactive on people who don't react to it, unlike the inert metals such as gold, plat, niobium, titanium. my understanding is that nickle is a component of stainless, and t...
