Re: old timers survey

I came late to controllers, and even when I had, I still used processes that required visual inspection of the work to achieve the results I wanted. I don't think there is ANY substitute for inspecting your work in the kiln under heat.

Re: The myth of a long slow cool?

Once the glass is properly annealed, you still have to worry about THERMAL SHOCK. They are two separate things. And, what you can do with a monolithic clear glass under exact, repeatable factory conditions is a far cry from someone fusing various colours of compatible glass in their home kiln, under...

Re: Fusing non rated glass.

I've done quite bit with Fremont glass, a beautiful hand blown flashed sheet glass that I use to get from Seattle.
A friend of mine worked there. As it was flashed, I just fused clear to clear, worked great . . .

"Hitting it with a hammer is applying too much force."

That might just depend how hard you hit it, doncha think?

Re: Makita 5010 sander

Why take advice from someone who has broken glass by overheating it on a wheel with a water feed?
That implies a staggering level of bad technique and incompetence.

Re: Makita 5010 sander

I've done it, a lot. It is certainly a good option for arrissing or edging large pieces of float where it is much easier to bring the tool to the glass. However, a huge percentage of the people here are concerned with finishing edges of much smaller fused pieces, where it is much more difficult to u...

Re: Chart for temperature + time = same results

. . . I just thought I would add more time, but unsure how much, then thought "what would happen at a little higher temp"? . . What Brad said. I am a huge proponent of LOOKING in the kiln to control processes. As a general rule, a smaller mold, or span, may require a longer hold or a highe...

I've never bought a diamond belt. I was sent one by an Asian manufacturer for testing, an 80 grit. I let a student try it and it delaminated in seconds. Like you, I preferred SC belts.

Wow, sounds great. You should probably get one. It would make your highly technical deformed float over crumpled fiber paper easier to achieve. You probably wouldn't have them break so often.

You said,"I don't know a single advantage to a brick wall. Well . . . several of us do, long slow anneals. That heat that has been put into those brick walls is released slowly and assists in the annealing cycle. I tried to give you a hint, "Monolithic float versus multiple piece art glass...
