Using Ferro and Thompson enamels on float at same time...
I forgot to ask this of Bert while attending his glass painting class in Hillsboro, OR - (where I was delighted to meet a dozen interesting and very talented artists). Anyone have any experiences of disaster ? It makes sense to keep a thin coating , and not on top of one another. Or, maybe they coul...

Oh come on, one more Nigerian story. About 20 years ago- in my past life- I worked on a road construction job in the Aleutian Islands, the 'birthplace of the winds'. Afterwards, I had a great idea for a small business - rain-proof, water-proof hard hat liners. Not too long after receiving my busines...

An interesting thing happened to me today, however, I am clueless as to your dilemma. A couple of months ago, a woman aproached me about sand carving a design for glass in her two doors. I was short on time then, but, with she being an interior designer, I encouraged her to draw her own design. Some...

Pot melt - Float question
I don't really have a kiln with enough depth, and, really intend to move in a different direction, but, the pot melt technique is SO interesting. If a person was to use float glass, I would imagine the temp to hold would be a bit higher, and, a longer hold then Randy was using ? (I think he was goim...

It's been done before.... Who is that guy that designs snowflakes, that no two are alike ? If I was a pessimist, I'd say that in all these thousands of years of blizzards, there has HAD to be two alike, but, no one 'human' has been around long enough with nothing better to do but to check them all. ...

I've taken one class, over a year ago - the only available class in this area that I know of - and I still know nothing about technique. Obviously, it's all in what you decide to impart as an instructor. The class involved 4 small pieces; all of the instructor's own design - a candle votive, a heart...

Re: Acid
Tony and Steve- I just tested a sample of Robert Stephan's (HIS Glassworks) ammonium bifluoride stuff for sandblasted surfaces. Tested a quart, bought 10 gallons. Set up a ventilation hood, got gloves and apron and safety glasses, tubs for dipping and rinsing, baking soda for neutralizing the rinse...

Also consider changing out your abrasive. I use silicon carbide, and it needs to be changed out every 100 uses - or so. The great thing about s.c., is the aura of 'light' it generates - I can actually see better when things are darkened a bit. After burning up 3 motors on shop vacs, I've opted for t...

Apply to your state council on the arts, for the mailings (at least in this area). There is usually a 'panel' of people that decide - it's not whether you're 'accomplished' nesessarily, but, whether they (as a group) like your proposal. Proffesional slides, resume' helps immensly ! My opinion is to ...

I am aware of the photo resist, but don't understand how to get 'grey tones' - any idea about that ? I had a job a couple of years ago, that was bigger than my exposure unit - by quite a bit. I ended up using the sun as the light exposure source (up in Alaska, in March, is a lot different than any o...

Hi - Etching cream will only rough the surface; to blast or carve, you'll need abrasive and all the equipment. Tony is a good contact - he knows what you need. It's almost impossible to get an even etch with cream, unless you keep the areas small (1/2") - I despise the cream. If the weather is ...

Sandblasting
Hi - For the size pieces you describe, a tleast a 12"x24" cabinet would suffice. Your dust collecting/vacuum system should be appropriate to the size - don't forget a respirator, for any time the door is open. TIP catalogue has bench model cabinets.
