Re: US equivalent for Keramicast

Found an answer to the question of finding a strong refractory plaster, similar to Keramicast, for casting float glass. Found this among ages-old old notes from Warmglass: "FYI: Dental Stone (and all variant names of such, e.g. FGR-95) is also known as Hydrocal. This is the alpha hemihydrate fo...

Re: US equivalent for Keramicast

The CD us a tome! I tried printing it out and stopped after 60 pages. there are a lot of gems to digest in there. The reason I'm asking for anyone's experience is that Angela suggests using a "hard" plaster for casting float glass. I want to cast fairly large pieces,20-30 pounds, and need ...

US equivalent for Keramicast

angela Thwaites recently published a delightful small book "Mould Making for Glass," a follow up from her thesis work in GB, detailed on her CD "Mixing with the Best." She describes Keramacast as a good, high-density alpha-type plaster for mold making. Does anyone know of a US eq...

Stunning work. So real. The series would be incredibly powerful shown together. Good luck with your gallery quest.

Re: vermiculite boards

Bullseye markets a box casting kit made from the higher density Skamol vermiculite(600 compression..the 450 is too crumbly), and a set of instructions for making one from a 1" thick sheet of vermiculite. They suggest pre-firing the components. No reason given.

Re: Determining casting mold plaster volume

A useful quick reference table for proportions and volumes of a refractory plaster mix is on the last page of Ted Sawyer's Bullseye tipsheet on Box Casting.

Re: Problem :Sand blaster doesn't deliver

Tony: You are so still needed :). This is a non-art, blasting question probably not worthy of your expertise: What would you charge a contractor to blast, for his customer, one surface of 6, 46" x 8-1/2" pieces of 3/8" float (for shelving). I blasted a scrap piece that size last night...

Brad:
Thanks for the reminder. Our guild (National capitol Art Glass Guild) is sending CERF $500 this year. I'm glad such a fund is available.

Thanks for the info. Steve talked a little about his lathe in the class I took from him. Didn't know it was the same piece of equipment. BTW I got to see some of Steve K's work in Pismo gallery in both their Beaver Creek and Vail locations last week. The gallery owners spoke very highly of Steve and...

Fabulous piece, Steve. Really appealing color, design, shape, finish. It evokes memories of the Australian rainforest I saw last summer.

I was wondering where you found the nice, long arbor and lathe pictured in the calendar. Is it home-made (adapted) from other equipment?

Or you could draw stringer through a vitrigraph kiln and coil it up closely around metal pipes of the desired diameter. Cut apart the coil and slump and tack fuse thr ring to close up the seam.

Jerry: Your site is really colorful, with a big variety of interesting art glass pieces. I'll echo the sentiment that it would be useful to be able to see enlarged photos, especially in the casting section. Ice Princess is pretty amazing, especially at life size. I'd really want to see that rose up ...
