On a slightly different topic, I just got one of those 6" blade stiffeners from HIS for my 10" Result blade, and it makes a huge difference in being able to cut accurately.

I started out with a 60 grit diamond belt from Kingsly North for my Covington WBS, and SiC belts for the other grit sizes. If you want to use leaf, I think it's probably better with a clear cap. It takes three layers of leaf ( and I'm assuming we're talking about real gold leaf) to get a good gold color. I find that I can get a good firepolish at 1350 degrees with a 20 minute hold.

To heal a crack, you have to go back to full fuse (1490-1500). But, if the crack is from incompability it will probably come back after refiring.

If you use one layer of the leaf and bring to full fuse, much of it will burn off, but if you use three layers, most will remain.
