I used to get much devitrification using R&R 101. Always on the top (air) side of the glass.

I then switched to a 1:1 plaster:silica with a scoop of R&R 910 thrown in as a reinforcement to prevent cracking and I've had neither cracks nor devit ever again.

most models Don't look like that either, everything is highly photoshopped (look up "Dove evolution" on YouTube) Dolores, I watched that video on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYhCn0jf46U It was a real eye opener for me! I always knew models were Photoshopped, but not to that ex...

An alternative is to make the slump mold out of clay, and then fire the clay a little bit hotter than the temperature you will fire the glass.

You will need to use kiln wash.
