Ok, how about a few minutes at low temp before going to the regular firing schedule, just to make doubly sure it's dry?

Kiln wash curing?

Stupid question time--what is the point in "curing" a freshly kiln washed shelf? I can't see why preheating a fully dry shelf before using it at fusing temps is worth doing. What am I missing here?

Ummm, I'm wondering if I have a bad shelf. This has a visible texture to it--no amount of kiln wash will cover it. Sort of like a mini-weave. Besides, I spray on, rather than brush on the wash. I want to "fix" it once and for all.

Vidrio, you can use any length of skewer or toothpick you want--the important part is the bead release coating. I make the same size pendants, and allow about 1/2" to stick out on each side. You can go online to any of the glass beadmaking supply companies--Frantz, Arrow Springs, Heritage Glass...

Would you believe the bead release? Really! The first time I tried it I was astounded. You get no ash left, just a round "tunnel" caused by the bead release. The size depends on the size of the wood, but the skewers make a hole about 3/32" same as my steel mandrels. Don't be skimpy on...

Smoothing kiln shelf?

I'm wondering if there is a way to get a smoother texture on my kiln shelf. I don't want to use any paper or other consumable product (other than kiln wash). Anyone had experience with just sanding the shelf, or is there a better idea?

Try bamboo skewers or round toothpicks dipped in thick bead release and allowed to dry. The wood burns out and leaves a hole. The skewers leave a larger hole than toothpicks if that is a consideration. Stainless steel mandrels dipped in bead release also work. Also, make sure you allow enough space ...

Help me fix my grinder!

I've been using the same bit on my Inland Wizard grinder since I got it about 6 months ago. Now I want to change to a channel bit, and I can't get the #%$^& bit off! Hubby has joined in the effort, and we've tried penetrating oil and eventually tried to drill out the screw after the allen wrench...

Okay, here goes: Brian, here's the reference to what I was talking about: http://www.ramoreydesign.com/shelfmelt.html Barbara, I don't have sandblasting equipment, so I still have a problem. What happens to the devit in the final firing if it starts with devit?? Can I just put a devit spray on the p...

This is probably a pretty stooopid question--if so, just snicker quietly. :? On late-night television I often see an ad for "sand-blasting" using compressed air and stencils on drinking glasses, etc. Would this method work on dichro, since it has a fairly soft coating? I'd like to try blas...

Devit, cracked mold & slip-slidin' away

I've got three questions for you learned folks: 1. When you do a fusing of stained glass scraps (same COE, of course), using a wire grid, do you use something to prevent devit? If so, what's the best way to do this? Can you just dunk all the pieces into Borax and water or Spray A? Or do you have a b...

Actually, that's one thing I was considering. I don't think we'll use table again for furniture, but he could split the table where the leaf goes in and do the fasteners there. It would be pretty easy to do, and would preserve looks.

Hubby made me some carpet protectors for my office chairs out of 3/4" plywood, and I think that is what I want to use for the table. There wouldn't be much of an overhang--mostly a matter of squaring off the rounded edges, but I would gain about 6-8 square feet of space--mostly to keep all that...

I've been posting under the title "Hen Party" but I've been asked to open up the glass trip to those blessed with testosterone. That's up to you, but for now I've created a central clearinghouse for all messages related to this venture. This message will be posted in several forums to brin...

Thanks, Phil. Is there an advantage to it over plywood? Especially since it absorbs water and expands. I'm thinking of covering my work table, which is an old kitchen table, in a rounded rectangular shape. If I put a sheet of plywood over it I can considerably expand the actual square footage of the...

Well, actually, there is quite a bit of response on some of the other chatlines I'm posting this on. I've heard from a second bus company, which was less costly than the first, so I think it's definitely do-able. I want to form a central "clearinghouse" chatline for all of the various peop...
