Barbara: Ultrasonic cleaning is fast and has worked well to clean up my slices. However one time a batch came out with some internal fissures (probably poorly annealed).

Simply gorgeous. Elegant, soft, beautiful color. You're such an inspiration! I just received the 1992 Daum book by Bacri. Their pate-de-verre pieces are right up there with yours.

Hi Jerre: You asked a great question. As you know, Tiffany dragonfly jewels were cast in brass molds. It's rumored that Chicago Art Glass and Jewels still has a few originals. I hope someone on this board will have some suggestions. Have a great weekend!

Alse try Polytek. They have a great, instructive catalog and make several kinds of rubber molds. They'll also send you smaller size containers at a discount, on a one-time per product basis so you can try them out. Have fun!

Oops: I meant to address that to Sarah. A workshop you might want to look into is one by Roger Thomas. He has you make dozens of technique sample tiles that for many of us in the class became the basis for a glass reference library. You just have to remember to put lables on the back to remember how...

Judy: The following is an assignment that Beth and I gave ourselves a couple of weeks ago. In a more anal moment, I wrote it up like an experiment, referencing information from Judy Conway's article and notes from Bob's class. Hope it's useful! I don't see why it wouldn't work for casting or slumping, as long as it was lined with release material. In Ted's workshop, we lined the sides and bottom of the box with 1/8" fiber paper, so the glass never touched the vermiculite. Check the manufacturer's site (Skamol, Denmark) for further inf...

Charlie: I didn't go to GAS but Ted Sawyer gave a workshop at Vitrum where we used the the vermiculite mold material. Bullseye just came out with a tech sheet on it. I don't know who's going to market it, but it's inexpersive and you can buy it by the palate directly from the US distributor in Charl...

Steve and Tony: From past posts we know that Silicon carbide fractures into ever smaller but still sharp particles. I'd like to compare the physical structure of the abrasives microscopically but that probably won't tell us anything further about how glass becomes fractured. I tried to compare the v...

Bert: You may be happy to know it does come full circle. My daughter got her tongue ring at Columbia U her first year and kept it in for 4 years, until interviewing for a much wanted internship with NASA two weeks ago. Long hair got cut but not so short that it wouldn't still hide the stainless stee...

'finally do "lost foam" castings into silica/plaster or Zircar moulds" Very curious: what is the foam material and how do you "lose" it. Sounds like an interesting alternative to wax. Isn't Zircar a really expensive but strong material? Would you mind sharing a little of you...

I like your non-pierced ear-cuff idea! It even sounds elegant, especially with a little dichro splash (even for a beginning second-half of the century person). My daughter and son would flip! Think I'll try making a couple with a strips of the squares - patterned dichro noodles.

My daughter comes home from college every once in awhile and makes borosilicate ear plugs and comma-shaped ear loops. I guess the ear loop style or open rings could be made a bit smaller and used as naval ornaments. Could be the start of a whole new enterprise  the price mark-up and profit are...

Interesting site. Looks like there's still no method to eliminate the surface haze that forms when glass and plaster molds meet at melting temperatures. I was wondering if anyone has tried spraying boron nitride onto a plaster refractory mold before filling with frit and firing.

I'm so looking forward to Bob's class, and getting a chance to meet you! :) Not-just-a-hobbiest-anymore-Jim is also in the class, and I'm hoping we can get together one of the nights if we're not too tired. Through some incredible luck and fate, I live only 20 minutes from Vitrum.
