Re: HOMEMADE IRIDIZING?

Years ago I bought some stannous chloride, thinking I could iridize glass in the kiln. Fortunately a chemical engineer friend warned me that I'd be building a bomb in my kiln so I didn't try it. I just now googled 'glassblowing & stannous chloride' and lots of info came up. I understand it's use...

Re: Giant clam

Vonon, your question has gone unanswered for a few days so I'll take a shot. I'm pretty sure the handbag reference is about crocodiles. Their skins are used for leather goods. No fun swimming with giant Salties (salt-water crocodiles). Jellies would be jellyfish which can have trailing, stinging ten...

Re: Relief casting mold

[quote="Don Burt"]Can I buy some sort of refactory product into which I can carve out the tree limbs in relief, coat with kiln wash, and then cast frit into? Or can I cut out tree limb shapes with a razor knife out of some sort of blanket and cast into the cookie mold onto the kiln shelf? ...

DON'T put it down the toilet if you have a worm-powered sewage system. It'll tear their little guts out!

Thank you very much for clarifying that, Don, and the advice regarding antique v float. Those borders have the sparkle and intensity of flashed glass.

Re: glass I'm working on

I'm running out of superlatives here, Don. Is the blue enamel R&G transparent? It's so intense, not wishy-washy at all. Is it the sandblasting on the back that contributes to the intensity? I can get reasonable results on white but on clear glass the effect is pretty blah. I don't have R&G e...

Excellent advice, Marty.......was trying to think how best to frame advice around a topic I know little about.

Beautiful intricate work, Don, and a few more steps up the degree-of-difficulty scale. Thanks for sharing, Jen

Re: 3D printer to glass casting

Roykirk, Sounds as though you need a different recipe for your mold mix. Put 'Mold mix for casting' into the search field at the top of the page and you'll get lots of good info.( Nefertiti looks pretty spiffy! )Good luck, Jen

Re: Old plaster

I've read that, too, a few times. Is it a myth put about by the manufacturers? Or is there more to it? Here's some chat about it: http://www.potters.org/subject82013.htm I've got some that must be ten years old. I was thinking of putting it in the kiln before I tried to use it. Would I be wasting my...

All the most appropriate adjectives have been used so I'll simply agree! Love the fine, serene detail lines and the contrast with the turbulence of the individual squares. Well done!

Are you using a mold, Jim, or is the shape made using fibrepaper or board with a square cut out? Jen

Re: Ventilation

Interesting topic. Working alone I position a fan to blow fumes away from me, gently, so as not to cool the soldering iron. With a group that wouldn't work as someone(s) would always be in the firing line. I've been thinking about a range hood exhaust fan dangling over the layout table. That w...

Re: Cracked as a feature

A long time ago last century I made a large (3) - panel shattered glass screen for a restaurant as well as a few table tops. Each panel was composed of a single sheet of tempered glass laminated between two sheets of annealed (non-tempered) glass. The exciting part is putting the tip of a nail again...
