Re: Annealing question

Another question here... I'm making thick slabs and then slumping them. If I have a little stress from the fusing part can I get it out by slowing down the slumping? I was thinking of adding some more time to my fusing schedule but maybe I should just add time t the slumping schedule... What do you ...

Re: bubbles in 1/8" sheet fusing

I really don't know that much about fusing but those bubbles look like they are under the clear. Are you using kiln wash? If so do you pre fire the kiln wash?

Re: Annealing question

Thanks Brad, I have a hard time understanding Graham's book. I've been a glass blower for 28 years and never had trouble with my annealing but kiln work is new to me and didn't know if I was missing something. What you said makes sense and follows my common sense approach to glass.

Fiber compared to kiln wash

I've been making some thicker slabs with Spruce Pine glass that have a lot of clear glass. They are turning out very clean except for a light dusting of white spots on the surface. You can hardly see them, you have to be looking at the right angle. The thing is the last piece I made I used kiln wash...

Re: large kiln

Hey Jen, can I ask wh you are getting rid of that kiln? I've always thought that design is very nice but you don't see it around much. Is it difficult to use?

Re: Annealing question

Was just looking at bullseye... They suggest 4 hrs hold for 1" thick.

I never understand why there is such huge differences in schedule times.

Annealing question

I was reading about annealing and I can't believe the suggested times. The Graham Stone book was suggesting, 1 inch thick piece held at annealing temp for 12 hours. I've been holding for 5 hours and have seen no trouble. Of course not cracking doesn't mean much but I have cut and ground my pieces wi...

Re: Devitrification

That is interesting as I've never seen a piece of glass crumble away. I mostly ment... If I fuse a piece of bullseye glass and it has a tinny little devit spot on it. Does that little spot get worse over time or does it stay the same? Now I make sure to polish out or sandblast away all such spots, b...

Devitrification

So I know we don't want devit but is it totally bad.

In other words, if you have a little devit spot will it get worse or eventually crack the piece?

Do you always get rid of devit or do you just live with it sometimes?

Vermiculite board

So I carved out a vermiculite board to make a slumping mold... Do I need to put kiln wash on it before slumping?

I think no but the wife doesn't agree with me and now I'm doubting myself.

Re: Help with devitrification

Yes Hawaii is a great place but I miss winter sometimes, although that's why they made vacations. Never too late to learn more about glass.

Re: Help with devitrification

Well this is actually my wife's pieces. She is stacking square colors about 4-5 high to make dotted patterns. Overall it's not much glass and it all fuses down to 6 mil. Then cutting up the pattern and putting it next to two layers and fusing it all together. So far we have used the same program for...

Re: Best kiln

I ended up buying the paragon gl24adtsd... It seems to fire real nice but it's been hard to load. We are figuring out ways around the front loading but one of these days I'll get a top loader.

Re: Help with devitrification

So no one has anything to add... What I'm really curious about is whether people force cool the oven when it's done fusing or if they let it cool naturally?

Help with devitrification

So I've been doing my first fusing and I'm getting some devitrification on only some colors. What am I doing wrong? I'm doing some 5-6 layer stacking and some double sheet fusing at the same time. When you reach full fuse temp and it is cooling down do you open the door to force cool or just let the...

Kiln wash

So I'm trying to learn stuff on my own, with tons of help from the Internet. I've had some good first firings but kiln wash is a pain. Do you really scrape off all the old kiln wash, to a bare shelf, before applying more? Or do you scrape off just enough to make it smooth again? Scraping is kind of ...
