Ya, Brock, but sometimes you need to make your bed and then sleep on it. Or do you sleep on it and then make it.....
I usually sleep in them and don't make them.

Re: Root cause analysis

Brock, Do you know for a fact that the merc relay failed or was it in fact the control signal to the relay that stuck on? It is my understanding that a merc relay turns off from gravity thus cannot fail in the on position. The only way it could fail on is that the enegerizing coil was on thus the f...

As usual COMMON SENSE RULES. Set it up right and sleep well. The more expensive is your control equipment, the more reliable it should be, I hope. (Brock's controller is the most expensive but only he knows just how reliable it really is) It's still more reliable than a manufacturer mounted controll...

Sandblast or steelwool or emery cloth to give surface a "tooth". Heat to 350F. Spray or brush kilnwash (slightly more diluted if spraying) until wet spots show. Stop and reheat. Repeat spray. Let dry. Slump-n-go (tm).

Usually it's done by slumping plate glass onto a prepared bed.
A lot of the bed mixes are proprietary, and secret.

Re: What impresses me

In short "Concept" and "Execution" Don Okay, if "Concept" equals design sense, content, emotional impact, the ability to provoke and initiate a response, the "WOW" factor, and just the sheer beauty of the piece, and "Execution" means technical abili...

There is a relief piece of a dress. It's several panels that have a negative relief image of a dress that is fabulous and the other more traditional, contemporary sculptural pieces are really terrific. Thanks for sharing this site. Yeah, that's Karen LaMonte. There was a good article on her in Glas...

Yeah, it looks to me like the animal series is slumped over some kind of template. Very crisp and detailed. Good technique. Brock

No Laughing! Where's the fun in that? Anyway, a pot drop is just like it sounds, suspend a container, with a hole in the bottom, (clay flowerpots work great) full of glass over a shelf. Get it hot, and the glass comes out in a stream. Makes some interesting patterns. Brock

Or am I going to be trounced as a judgmental jerk? Not by me, you're not. My initial respponse to this work was abrupt and dogmatic. I stand by it. It is a silly affectation to take the position that you will not use power tools in your work. Guess what, a kiln is a power tool. And, even if you had ...

Absolutely Bob, I've been using stove switches for years. In my kilns, if I'm at full fuse, 1450, then I just put my stove switch halfway between Off and 1 and the kiln will lose heat gradually and stall out around 960. Perfect. After a slump, then I turn it down to 2, and the same thing, it stalls ...

I believe Sarah is referring to millifiori, (Italian for thousand flowers) hot worked and drawn rods of glass with a pattern running throughout the length. Many people use these rods in their work by nipping them to length, then arranging them on a shelf and firing them. Mel Munsen is one great exam...
