Firing Top and Sides, etc

So with help from Tony and others I have installed a switch that now allows me to fire 1) both top and side elements, 2) top only or 3) side only. (I can also manually adjust the heat from the top using a rheostat that Olympic installed on the kiln. This is obviously going to require documented test...

Relative Viscosity for BE?

Is there a table with some sort of value assigned to BE glass that indicates it's relative viscosity? (Within the BE family....)

Thanks

Re: Adding Switch To RTC-1000

Here is the schematic that Olympic sent. Lid relay and rheostat on top, notice that one of the side relays control one element while the other controls a pair of elements. Couple of questions for the experts here: - Why would the bottom relay that controls a pair of elements have one element with a ...

Re: Adding Switch To RTC-1000

Thanks Tony. It actually has 3 relays (I've replaced them), top, upper side and lower side. I assume a single switch for both side relays will do, right?

Re: Adding Switch To RTC-1000

Ah ha...... I'll call Olympic with the SN this week. It does have the infinite switch on the side as you suspected but I have always left the top elements set to full. And I do need it to top fire only, so some sort of switch is likely needed. (Gotta turn off the side elements somehow......) Thanks ...

Adding Switch To RTC-1000

I'd like to add a 3 position switch to my Bartlett RTC-1000 that would allow me to select top, side or both sets of elements. It is running my Olympic GF314ETLC.

Seems possible, has anyone done this? If so, can you share details and/or suggestions?

Thanks

Wazer Destktop Water Jet

The Wazer desktop water jet cutter just launched. I have been chatting with these guys for a while and sent them several BE fused samples of different thicknesses to test. Notice the cut speed for 1/8" soda lime is about 12"/min. Not for big or thick pieces but could be very interesting fo...

Sandblaster Question

My SB has been used for glass work only, even though friends have asked to use it for car parts, etc..... :? But my family has asked if I could use it to etch these stainless steel cups that are so fashionable now. If I did that would the SS particles contaminate the media so that it could not/shoul...

Re: Lap Grinder Question

Marty is correct, I was asking about putting a flat edge on a vessel, edge to be parallel with the bottom (and the ground). Dana, I understand your point about using the lap grinder to soften the outside hard edge. I've just recently started using that method, saves a lot of time. Thanks to both of ...

Lap Grinder Question

Does anyone use a lap grinder with center feed water to grind/polish the edge of a piece larger than the radius of the disc? For example, a 10" bowl on a 12" disc.

Are there risks, issues or problems with this approach? (I'm aware of the hand lapping with loose grit option.)

Thanks

Water System for Coldworking

I've accumulated a fair amount of coldworking equipment and need to build a waste water system. I have heard about designs that use 2 tanks, the first is a holding tank that allows the suspended gunk to fall out and accumulate on the bottom, to be disposed of later. This tank has an outlet higher up...

Lytherm 1/16" Fiber Paper

I have been given a 200 'x 2' x 1/16" roll of Lytherm 550-LF fiber paper the original owner apparently bought for use in a glass kiln, but never used. MSDS online has the expected precautions about inhalation and handling hazards for this kind of material. I found a spec sheet here: http://www....

Re: Haze on Drop

Thanks Richard, I understand your point but frankly don't have any other facts to share. I'd take a picture but it is very faint and only in the top 1-2" of a 6" high drop. The smaller/shorter drops don't seem to suffer from this effect so it may have something to do with the size. All gla...

Looking for some feedback here, no one has seen this before or just don't use MR-97 on drop rings?
