Re: using cookie cutters

I have yet to see a cookie cutter that was stainless. That being said I did use a regular Wilton star shaped cookie cutter to make a one off item when my son the freelance photographer called and said the Houston Chronicle needed an aqua glass star 4" across for the cover of their 2007 gift gui...

I use the Dremel drill press attachment to assure that the drill is at a right angle to the glass throughout the drilling operation. I place the glass on a 3" square piece of 1/4" plywood that is in an aluminum (non rusting) cake pan about 8" dia. I adjust the distance the drill exten...

The idea is to start out with 1/4" (6mm) thickness of glass to avoid movement and distorsion as the glass seeks to get to its natural 1/4" thickness when it is fired. It does not mattter what thicknesses are used in the layers as long as the total thickness is 1/4". Best wishes, Tom i...

You might want to consider putting pieces of ceramic tile (non flamable) under the legs of the stand on the down side to level the whole kiln.

Best wishes.

1465 seems a bit low for full fuse with float. I need at least 1500. Try 1500 for 10 minutes and see if it works for you. Each kiln is different and you have to find what works in your kiln.

I have had the same experience. Parts of the back of the copper where the glue was used to hold it in place were bright, metalic copper color while the front of the copper was the deep red or maroon color. From this experience I developed the theory that when there is organic material (glue) in cont...

Bill, the cookie cutter moght work. My concern would be that the metal form might shrink more than the glass when it cools and be hard to reemove or even crack the glass. Look at the experiments album at http://photos.yahoo.com/tomwhite2 for a picture a small ss heart mold I shaped from a 3/4" ...

The most likely cause for cracking in a second firing is poor anealing in the first firing or too rapid heating in the second firing. Please post your firing schedule for both the tack fuse firing and the slump firing. Be sure to include anealing information for both firings. Best wishes, Tom in Texas

Geri, I think that either your potter friend was misinformed or else that the formulation for the gold luster has changed since she obtained her information. Duncan Ceramics in their page for ceramic retailers titled "Learning About Premium Gold" located at http://www.duncanceramics.com/ce...

Geri, what basis do you have for saying "The golds luster used for ceramics are not food safe"? In the world of ceramics the term "non toxic" refers to the material as supplied in the bottle while the term "food safe" refers to the suitability of the product for food co...

Liquid bright gold for ceramic items can be applied to the top surface of your fused item then refired to 1300 -1350 F to produce the metalic gold area on the top surface of your item.

If you have a blank fused you can measure the length across the middle of the blank then take a flexible measuring tape and place the center point ...
