Re: is spray A dangerous?

It is a good idea for anybody who works with glass to check into the facts about lead poisoning. I contacted my state occupational health agency many years ago about it. In some ways, it can be less dangerous than you think and in some ways it can be very dangerous. When working with lead based flux...

Re: glassline paint and powdered frit

I am just finishing a piece that I did by fusing frits in first for atmospheric effects and then using paints for imagery. My paints mature at 1350 instead of 1440 though. My frit fuse fire must be high enough to yield a really smooth surface since I am screen printing my image on after fuse firing ...

Re: Ball milling residue

I think that it was the alumina contamination from the alumina balls. I switched over to steel balls and I don't seem to have the problem. By the way, I use a muriatic bath to solve out any iron residue from the steel and it seems to work much better than magnets. Thanks for the input.

Re: Terrible luck ordering shelves

I just picked up a group of 16"x16"x1" Corelite shelves this morning. I got the Corelite because Laguna Clay evidently didn't have any 5/8" cordierite shelves in stock and didn't know when they would be made. Laguna Clay purchased Thorley several years ago according to my supplie...

Re: Terrible luck ordering shelves

Yes. I run the kiln up to around 500 degrees fairly quickly (that means the shelf is not quite at 500 degrees due to lag time in temp absorption) then I take out the shelf and place it on wood blocks to spray it. I spray it until the water doesn't steam away and then reheat it again if there is not ...

Re: Terrible luck ordering shelves

I am going through ordering new shelves myself and have run into some supply issues. Laguna Clay is the main domestic supplier of cordierite shelves and their production cycle seems to dictate supply. I was looking for 16"x 16" x 5/8" cordierite and they are out until they run a new b...

Re: duraboard as dams

I needed a large shelf for my new kiln so I rigidized a 42"x48"X1/2" piece of Duraboard ES with colloidal alumina (Wesolok D). I dried it thoroughly before firing it but the board still warped when I fired it. Does anyone have any ideas of how to take the Duraboard back to a flat stat...

Re: Polarizing film

Thanks Kevin. I am using a large light bank for my lighting source and I just want to limit the number of times that I have to move the base sheet of film. The pieces are mostly going to be 4' by 4' and kind of heavy.

Re: Polarizing film

Thanks Kevin. Where are the larger pieces located on aliexpress? I found quite a few for phones and tablets but nothing larger. I probably didn't look long enough.

Re: Polarizing film

I apologize for my rudeness. Thank you Tony and Jim for your responses. I have often received good information from folks on warmglass but I have also often asked questions that have elicited many responses that wandered far from the original question. Perhaps I have become over sensitized to this o...

Re: Polarizing film

I am doing large pieces where the size of the filters will matter. If you don't have an answer regarding the question about the Rosco sheet film, please don't reply. Thank you.

Polarizing film

I was looking for some polarizing film to check stress in some pieces and I have a question. Is Rosco #7300 polarizing film similar to the polarizing film that Bullseye sells?

Re: 1/4" granite textured clear glass?

Thanks Kevin but they want a heavier glass. I am going to try fusing a Spectrum clear granite to a Spectrum smooth clear after creating a plaster mold to maintain the texture at fusing temps.

Re: 1/4" granite textured clear glass?

I have already contacted the larger commercial suppliers in my area (Mpls/St. Paul) and have had no luck with getting either 3/16" or 1/4". They all seem to only handle a double strength clear textured similar to the Spectrum granite.

1/4" granite textured clear glass?

I need some 1/4" granite textured clear glass for a restoration project but I am having a problem finding any. I have the thinner granite clear but the customer wants thicker. Does anybody out there know of a source for this or am I going to have to kiln form it myself?

Re: Sale of Spectrum

Well for those of us located in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, the secondary effects of Spectrum and Uroboro's closing have come home. J. Ring our largest glass supplier and only wholesaler has announced it will be closing in December. With such a large portion of their suppliers being lost, I don't...

Re: Sale of Spectrum

Yesterday I received the information about Uroboro's closure. Since I use their frits in my work, I was to say the least dismayed. Today I was informed that the wholesaler that is in my area (Minneapolis/St. Paul) will be ending it's operations in December. It seems that there is a cascading effect ...

Re: Sale of Spectrum

I agree that it really is a mix of good and bad. Any increased production of 96 is appreciated by me but I also told myself that I would never knowingly support a maquiladora type operation. If the main reason that they have their production facility located in Tijuana is low wages and minimal envir...

Sale of Spectrum

I just received information about the sale of Spectrum to Oceanside Glasstile in Carlsbad CA. I guess they will producing some if not all of what was the Spectrum line in Tijuana. I was just wondering if anybody out there had any experience with this company.
