Re: Annealing Question

Go a little higher, say 1200. no need to hold.
When cooling, just turn it off. you will be fine.
I refire 6mm pieces and crash to 900, then recover, crash a second time, and open the kiln at about 500 (top loading kiln, mulllite shelves...makes a difference.)

Re: Homeowners' Insurance

Read the exclusions on your homeowner policy. If is has nothing that can be construed as anti-kiln (and most don't), you are under no obligation to notify them. In fact you probably should not notify them. Once they know, they can arbitrarily decide to ask you to remove them.

Re: UPS Lost Supplies

Have never had UPS lose a package. Shipped (and received) thousands of packages in my previous life. However, if it makes you feel any better (and it probably won't) the UPS driver will lose his job if you have reported the loss. UPS expects the drivers to lock their trucks whenever they are not in t...

Re: Need solid glue to replace Triolyse...

On our web site kaiserglass.com , we have a tutorial on how to use E6000. Works every time and holds virtually forever.
The "heat E6000 in a toaster oven" helps, but does not have the grip necessary for long term hold.

Re: SPECTRUM GLASS CLOSING DOWN

Several Comments: First, let us not forget that stained glass is a mainstay of most of the manufacturers that are being impacted. Stained glass has been hit even worse than fused glass by the great recession. This had a huge impact on Spectrum. The EPA overhang is only a contributory factor (could b...

Re: Devit Spray and Dichoric

There is devit spray, and there is devit spray. Glass based devit sprays may well cause problems with dichro. I don't use them, so I can't say. But borax based devit sprays do not affect dichro. Plenty of experience with that. I have a tutorial on my web site on how to make cheap borax based agent. ...

I agree with Joyce that the piece is marvelous.
There is plenty of great glass out there. I am sure that you will combine your creativity with the available glass and satisfy your customer.

Re: SPECTRUM GLASS CLOSING DOWN

the industry will survive this event . The real question is, will the nationwide glass industry survive. In my (uninformed) opinion, Uroboros could well be on the chopping block (I hope not). Once the EPA gets involved, it becomes a witch hunt. Even if there are no proven problems, the expense and e...

Re: Cooling small glass pieces - AFAP?

Small pieces that don't need bubble squeeze: AFAP to 1250°F hold 20 (just a stabilizing hold) AFAP to top temperature (depends on kiln. I use 1475-1500 for final fuse) hold 12 Vent kiln to 900° When temp rebounds to 1100 or so, vent a second time to 900. Close kiln until temp reaches 500. open kiln ...

Re: firing schedules for powder enamels on large pieces

Most thompson enamels do not work well with glass. They are not high enough in pigments to work in a thin layer. Our enamels as well as Sunshine are very highly pigmented, thus can be applied in thin enough layers to work well in most applications. Note: as long as the temperature goes over the matu...

Valerie and I are pretty much of one mind, but I have a higher threshold for stupidity. My defining moment was a PMC convention in 2011 (may have been 2010). I was a speaker and presenter and was blown away by the complete lack of curiosity and inquisitiveness shown by the typical attendee. 99% of t...
