Re: Pot Melt Primer

hahahaha...Jeanne. I think it's still in the bin in the workshop. Maybe I will retrieve it. My son did suggest I think up a title for it and enter it in glass competitions. Anyone know when BE's next Emerge closes? Jen

Re: Porcelain Kitchenware for Slumping?

This thread seems to be answering the question I just asked in the 'Pot Melt Primer' thread. I asked about porcelain tiles but the information seems relevant. Thank you, Valerie, Bert, Brad and the original poster. Jen

Re: Pot Melt Primer

Hi Sheree, cost to date, besides the pot and the glass: 101.00 including postage for custom element, 99.00 for refractory Castable and box of 10 bricks, 26.40 for Blakite mortar and postage to glue the patch back in, 13.20 for thermocouple wire and gas to go and pick up the items not mailed plus 19....

Re: Pot Melt Primer

Les, the controller did not register any higher than 1100 ℉ +. It was the first time I'd fired the kiln since it was connected to the controller. I'd previously fired it only once, empty, except for shelves, to 500 ℉ to check its rate of climb. I used a very conservative schedule, a combination of S...

Re: Pot Melt Primer

And not just crack them...Here's a genuine pot melt. The chocolate sauce is the flower pot. A little problem with the thermocouple and the controller not being on the same wavelength. Shaping of fire brick, mixing of castable refractory and now a high temp. mortar to be applied. That's bits of the d...

More.... Morgan thermal ceramics also has kiln bricks and refractory castable.

Pyro sales in Salisbury has thermocouples.

Kilnworks in Zillmere make elements.

Re: glass kiln plans

Beau, further to my last post....if you set fire to your cave with a non-approved (home-made) kiln your insurance will be void. I wonder how the DIY kilns mentioned in the previous post are certified? Jen

Re: glass kiln plans

Beau, it seems you want to build a jewellery kiln, not a casting kiln? (I accidently posted a question in this forum, too.) This is currently on eBay. It's on the Darling Downs and is at $305.00. It has a Harco controller. Harco is a NZ company which kindly sent me a controller manual for a second-h...

Re: glass bottle frit

Beau, it sounds as though you need a couple of good reference books. Brad, the owner of this WGB wrote one. There are others too, that will give you the basics. Classes are given in some of the major cities here and in some smaller towns, by glass retailers.

Re: buying glass

Andy T, I am attemping to buy a Taurus 3 ring saw here in Australia, I was quoted $1,800.00. Currency conversion is USD$.98 -AUD$ 1.00. So I will not be helping the poor Australian retailer to rip me off.OK Beau, I bought my Taurus 3 Ring saw from Delphi in August 2008. The US $ price at the time w...

Re: rust on glass from reciprolap

Hi Rose, I can't help with your last question but I seem to remember reading in one of the threads that Magic Eraser will remove rust marks from glass if it happens again. I haven't tried it so can't add an endorsement. Jen

Thank you so much Cynthia. That's a concise clarification. It will be much more accurate than the 'bite' test.
Much appreciated. Jen

Hard and soft glass

Is there a concise definition or way of identifying which glass is 'soft' and which is 'hard' art glass, please? I often see the expressions but don't really know what they mean other than that they fuse and melt at different temperatures. I feel I should know this but hope someone can educate me! T...

Re: Kiln wash 'crawling' on shelf.

Thanks, Valerie. That makes so much sense.

Thanks, too, Bert. The kiln is rated to 1100ºC so there's plenty of room to fire higher than I'll ever need. Hope to use it to make some moulds, too. Jen

Re: Kiln wash 'crawling' on shelf.

Thank you Valerie. I found this link when I was looking for information but it didn't show the 12" x 12" shelves that I have so I am not sure if they are the same type. Even so, I'm still not sure how to prepare them. Today when I looked at the shelf I thought had been successfully KW'd it...

Re: Kiln wash 'crawling' on shelf.

............ 1. Does this mean that one shelf has been used and fired and I can safely use it? Who knows? but you can fire them, which might make them accept kiln wash more easily. Usually the place where the kiln wash appears to lack adhesion is a more dense part of the shelf. Thank you Stephen. T...

Re: Kiln wash 'crawling' on shelf.

Thanks Kevin. I do use a shallow stainless steel tray with whiting for painting and staining. I have personal experience with silver stain accidently transferring from a kiln shelf to the back of a piece of painted and fired glass I made during Albin's course at Pilchuck. He put contact paper on the...

Kiln wash 'crawling' on shelf.

Recently I purchased a small used kiln, made in 1979. It looks new, the interior is pristine, max temp 1100 º C. It came with three shelves, 12"x12". They look like ceramic paving stones with an exceptionally smooth upper surface. Two were wrapped in a 1980 newspaper. On the underside is '...
