Re: mold size?

If your kiln is with the coil in the lid
you can use a mold that barely fits! If it is side fired you need around an inch.

Re: MR-97 mold release spray

mr97 seals the clay molds in a way that repels regular kiln wash. Since we are now a distributor of MR97 I have been doing further testing. I have found that a light sanding is all that is needed if you want to switch. That being said.....if you are using it on texture molds or casting molds you wil...

Re: Glue for fused work

When doing work with alot of frit or powders it makes life easier and if I ever have to spray a devit spray on glass that is finick...

Warm water and a smooth spongue will fix it.......just wipe it across the kiln wash a few times.

Re: Molds to large for kiln?

The colour de verre molds are casting molds and they do not vent out the bottom. The slumping plate mold......if it has holes to vent it needs to be on a small stilt so it can vent but
you usually do not need vent holes on a plate mold.

Re: Slumping lampwork beads for cabochons - firing schedule

photo.jpg This is just a quickie iPad photo of 104 miliflori that I brought back from a trip to Italy. We went to Murano and I brought back about 20lbs of it! Anyway….This memory piece is on my kitchen counter. I fired it to 1410 and it came out perfect. I was happily surprised. I have also fired s...

Re: Molds to large for kiln?

Use the molds.....just fire slower as your glass will be close to the elements. If you call Larry at colour de verre he will give you a program that will work. It is notmthe best situation butnyou can do it. There are 1/2 stilts that will give you the airflow you need for his molds. I also think tha...

Re: Project close to kiln edges

Sorry I responded so quick this morning. I now see that you already fired this. I believe that the reason you had fiber board stick to this is that you fired it too hot on the fuse. Your

second schedule looks fine but I think the last 25 to 800 is slower than necessary.

Re: Cause of blotches?

I would fire it to around 1400. Safeguard it with a devit spray or a light sprinkling with clear
powder.

Re: Project close to kiln edges

I am running out the door…..but my first reaction is it is Way too hot. I would not go over 1460 for this. I will read it better later.

Re: firing a new mold

Makes you wonder what they are firing these slip cast molds to on their firing. There should be no need to fire it again. We bisque our thrown molds to 1900 and they last forever but they are a different clay body.
I would not prefire.

Wet belt sander

I have been using a 24" flat lap grinder for the last 8 years or so. I would like to add a wet belt sander to our studio. I do not want to make a mistake by getting one that is too small and of course do not want to get one that we will quickly out grow. Been looking at Covington. The work we w...

Re: Kiln wash won't stick to new ceramic mold

When they make molds with a "pour slip" method….where the slip hits is called a hard spot. It usually may look like it does not have kiln wash on it but it probably has some. I would lightly sand it or put it on a hot kiln, try again, and then use it!

Re: Firing a large piece

If I were firing this.......if you are going to use 2 sheets as a base and put "mosaic" blocks on it I would prefire the 2 sheet base with a good bubble squeeze to your base so that it is totally flat then add the design. The weight of blocks can trap bubbles in the under double layer. Per...
