Why bother? 1/4 annealed glass is cheap. You'll probably spend more money in electricity and time than you would just buying new annealed glass that won't have scratches in it. e This reply probably qualifies as a new subject: economics. Yes, Ellen, 1/4" float glass is cheap. So is electricity...

de-tempering tempered glass

I also aquired a large quantity of tempered glass shelves from a department store. My sheets are 20" x 48". I stack six sheets with a light dusting of diatamaceous earth/plaster mix dry. I sift it very lightly through a fine mesh screen between each layer. Ramp up to 960 F at 10 degrees/ m...

food safety and borax spray

Did a quick search of archives but didn't find answer to my question. Does borax spray for devit affect food safety on glass intended for use with food? I know of the spray available called Spray A and the similar MasterSpray(?) I think it is Spray A which is not foodsafe. I have both so will check ...

Sandblasted glass: turning down the "white" effect

I showed a client a sample of glass on which I used tungsten carbide @ 180 mesh (I think it's 180). She liked it but thought it looked too "white". Will the polymer coatings discussed a few months ago tone down the "whitness"? I recall reading in the discussion that it will, is m...

Actually I had UV adhesives in mind but if I don't have to grind the back surface using a more viscous resin--Hey, I can get with that. But, doesn't the rounded fired edge of the glass pieces create an undercut and make cleaning difficult? Is there enough ooze of resin that can be trimmed with an Ex...

I don't have to grind the back surface? Doesn't the fired edge with it's roundness create an undercut that would be hard to keep clean? Is there some ooze of excess resin to trim away with an Exacto knife after curing? I'll have to make a sample piece to show the client (and then I'll have one to sh...

Bert, Thanks for the feedback, and yes, pushing the envelope is fun and frustrating at times. Thanks also for the leads on resin manufacturers. Part of the prooblem is that this shower enclosure is for an existing location so I haven't had the pleasure or advantage of designing from the ground up. T...

Bert, I plan to design around (within) the limits of my kiln which are 28" x 58" or there abouts. Will use 1/4" float to start or maybe 3/8" if I can get it tempered. I checked the old archives and read the discussion about resin laminate between my kiln-formed glass and tempered...

Michaels the crafts supply store carries small magnets that are about 3/16 inch thick. They are very strong and their thickness allows for an easy grip when pulling them off the fridge to hold up stuff.

I've contacted several companies that listed themselves as manufacturers of tempered glass and they all said they couldn't temper my fired glass panels. I'm in the DC area and would be interested in finding a cooperative glass shop to temper my glass. I'm talking to a client now who is interested in...

If you have a large supply of Spectrum, you might deal with devitrification prooblems with borax or other devit sprays. Devit has been discussed many times. Search archives. Also remember any given glass will be compatible with itself if it is cut from the same sheet. There are glass enamels, cerami...

Which glass color will receive the metalic luster? You might try firing your design in black glass enamel to make an opaque layer and then fire the luster on top of that. Test the enamel (I use Satelite enamels) at the max temp you want to use without distorting the glass. It should mature suitably ...

I just voted in favor of this format because I like the different sections a la Washington Post. I have logged on many times since this poll was started but hadn't checked this thread. Questionable: Gallery starts wholesaling to other galleries

I've been with a certain gallery going on three years now. When I delivered work this week one of the owners mentioned they were "wholesaling to other galleries now." I have mixed feelings about this, mostly negative. On the one hand they might sell more work and that is good. On the other...
