Re: similar group of awesome SG glass people

Warm Glass is the best discussion board I've found concerning working with glass. My main interest is stained glass but I return here frequently. What I find is thoughtful discussions and professional approaches to the work. It's not all about technique; it's more about attitude. After all, I've nev...

Re: Mistakes and Taking Risks

How are these big, thick pieces displayed? Do they get any light thru them?

Don:
Wondrful, entertaining & inspiring design, quality work; basically what we so often see from you.
I also love the turtles: What whimsey and lightheartedness.
Is the frame strictly painted or is it also wood-burned?
Thanks for the pic - Tod

Re: red copper stain

I looked up copper sulphide and still am not sure how I'd find or make it.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copper_sulphide

I know lots of folks don't trust Wiki but I wasn't sure where else to start. Is there a clue #2? Or maybe I just buy it all mixed? - Tod

For fun & in the name of science, you could also try lighting up your propane torch and hit the bottle with the flame...
Maybe fry it in a pan like we used to do with marbles?

Re: Help - stamping on glass

Propylene glycol mixed with paint also works for stamping. Well-known stained glass artist Debora Coombs uses it a lot and teaches its use.

Re: how to remove silicone glue?

I have successfully used razor blades and thumb nails but find that I often want to make it pretty by using 0000 steel wool with some whiting. The whiting helps stop the silicone from re-sticking and the steel wool, as much as I don't like using it, is fairly gentle as it removes more & more sil...

...more to consider:

codes and the reality of having custom insulated units made don't align nicely. Good luck!

Re: Do touching pieces fuse together or might there be a gap

One way to get extremely accurate glass pieces is with abrasive waterjet cutting. These can be cut to within a few thousandth of an inch. May be too pricey for most projects but it surely is as accurate as you can get, esp on such challenging shapes. - Tod

Re: Pressing glass into a mold?

Thanks, Cynthia. Your info helps and I think I'll avoid at least one unexpected result. I like the idea of "mashing" - I am a leaded glass guy but work with lots of irregular glass, esp antiques, so consistency is not a requirement. I have a few graphite blocks and was thinking about carvi...

Pressing glass into a mold?

I've been searching the archives a bit looking for info about pressing warm glass into a mold. Would the Castalot (mentioned in a recent post) work for this? Any suggestions about how to "press" glass into it? Maybe it would just flow when heated? I have hundreds of glass nuggets from Pell...

Re: Fastest way to make holes

I'm not sure exactly what you're doing, but abrasive water jet machines make sweet holes in glass. You do need to be going thru only one thickness. Holes of almost any size (& shape!) can be drilled this way. If you're making a series around a ring, you or the operator will need to devise a way ...
