Re: Murrini

Hi Jim. I've been pulling and laying up a lot of Murrine lately. In the beginning getting them to stand up was driving me crazy. This was mainly due to angled ends. If you're having trouble keeping the ends straight, just keep practicing. Trust me, you'll get the hang of it. One thing that helped me...

Re: Pot melt for Patten bar slices

Hi Tom, Yes, getting a perimeter of thicker clear at the border is typical when potmelting onto a clear base. You will likely see some, although much less, of the clear base across the entire back of the melt. You could flip it and try to add glass on top of the clear, but I wouldn't recommend it. M...

Re: Too much chipping

I agree, the quality of the blade is hugely important. I prefer both Husqvarna and Results blades, but don't rule out the saw itself causing your problems. Have you had excessive chipping when using this saw for other glass cutting tasks? I recently bought a Chicago Electric 10" saw to replace ...

Re: Stainless Steel for molds?

Hi Shawn, I'm no expert, but I've never experienced spalling at slumping temperatures. As Valerie described, I often get a lot of spalling at high temps (wire melts/combing), but the spall rarely stocks to the glass. If I recall correctly T304 SS is considered "high temp" grade and is more...

Re: Pot melt COE 96

You can get the glass to flow at lower temperature you'll just need to hold it at top temp longer. Depending on your kiln, 1650 or 1675 will work. You don't mention how much glass you will have in the pot, but take a peak after about a 45 minute hold at top temperature to see how things are going. A...

Re: Cutting, devit spray, and other questions

Can you give us a look at your firing schedules (fusing and slumping)? It's difficult to offer help without them. Also, what type of glass and kiln are you using?

Re: Screen Melt Scum/Devit

If you have access to a sandblaster, that would be the best way to try and clean it up. Then fire polish before slumping. High temperature firings can introduce a lot of variables that can cause this type of scum. It more or less comes with the territory, but may not always be a problem. I usually p...

Don - Thank you for sharing this. It brought into focus some vague thoughts I've been ruminating on the past few months. A bit of an "aha moment" for me. Garth's perspective and observations were illuminating.

Re: Spray A

Are you taking the glass to fire polish or fusing temperatures? My experience is that the whitish streaks occur when the Spray A hasn't been fired hot enough to melt it properly. You can do this at fire polish temperatures, but every kiln is different so I hesitate to give you a specific recommendat...

Shawn,

This is a stunning piece! Having seen it "live", the camera cannot quite capture the depth you've accomplished through your inspired layering techniques. Congratulations...it's a beauty. Reminds me of molten lava.
