i make peas out of scrap, most frequently out of transparent scrap. fire up small bits until they become peas and beans in shape. then load a pattern bar channel with peas, frit (the coarser, the better) and any other stuff you like, and fuse. the cast bars have the appearance of the underwater worl...

Sandblast grit Q

i have someone doing blasting for me since i dont have the setup. she has 120 alum oxide, and says my projects are too "hard" for this grit, and it's breaking down too quickly. i was surprised to learn that since she's blasting other kinds of glass for trophy work, like stuff for the Ironm...

maybe glue some marbles onto smallish pieces of glass, put them in the dishwasher, and leave them there for a week or two, see what the silicone looks like after a bunch of washings at 180F. it might get cloudy or yellow. or maybe it wont. experimentation with a couple of different brands of silicon...

the issue of chargebacks is the #1 reason i've heard for banks not granting VISA/MC deposits for business accounts held by small businesses. it's potentially a big liability for the bank. around here, they are especially negative to home businesses (no storefront), both for the chargeback issue, and...

i was approached by a trendy store that sells clothing and jewelry for the stylish gay man. theyre interested in my pendants, and short is the length, which makes sense. this project will probably come to fruition in 2004, so i'll report back on it then. it's too late in the year for me to take on a...

aloha geri -- are you looking for a 4-sided stand that revolves? i have seen a wooden stand, 4 sides, wire "dowels" maybe 3 rows high, so folded earring cards slip over the wire. the wire is actually thicker than that used for a wire coat-hanger. not too bendable. i think this style i've s...

i like the vanilla areas on the first plate. reminds me a little of Miro. i could go for a whole plate with that loose, scribbled appearance. real nice, Ron. up until seeing these pieces, i always thought of you as Mister Precision. thanks for posting the pix. kitty.

dichroic frit does not fire smooth.
it always leaves a gritty texture on top.
you have to put a cap on it, either clear frit, or a piece of clear sheet.
fire frit first, then add the cap for second firing.

how big? you can buy clear cabs in sacks at places that sell flower arranging stuff. polish the bottom to make it perfect, then fire polish. should work pretty well to put a picture under.

a passing thought: i assume you washed the pieces to see if the mottling came off. i was thinking sometimes people who work in stores use some strange stuff to clean and polish merchandise, which made me wonder if it might be a residue from Pledge, or who knows what. i dont think the amount of salt ...

dont spend too much time worrying about what you don't have. it sounds to me like you've got the makings of a pretty good one, since you're bringing your ceramics background to the progression into glass. i like that; it makes sense. other people will understand it, too. personally, i dont care what...

i see your point, of course, as to whether the works speaks for itself, but i suggest this: work does not speak for itself. i dont mean your work personally. dont underestimate the importance of what is written in a resume, bio, artist's statement, or process notes. these are marketing tools. after ...

i think a buff with diamond brite will very likely take off the irid. it's relatively aggressive (the diamond brite, i mean -- comes from rio grande in a block, you touch your rotating buff to it). maybe a wire wheel would work, too. i dont have dremel, i have foredom. bit more powerful, but same ki...
