Re: Chart for temperature + time = same results
As Bert said, each kiln, mold and glass is different. If you use the same set up you could run a series at different temps to an observed "full slump." You can than generate a graph (curve) for each. The area under the curve is heat work. You can than use calculus to measure the area under...

Re: Vitrograph Cane
Thanks Cynthia and Cheryl. That is what I suspected was happening. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of boxing in the squares with stainless steel. There will be no air in the pack and colors and change overs will be in register. Also, squares are a lot faster to cut than circles a...

Re: Vitrograph Cane
Thanks. I think the "trick" is making the circles larger to match the slope of the pot. It might work if I stack uniform size squares and then place 4 stainless steel plates to "box in" the squares. That would cut the capacity of the pot, but would keep the color sequences and de...

Hi,
Stacking straight up. As the pot diameter increases toward the top, there is much more side space near the top. The squares are uniform in size.
Thanx,
Warren

Vitrograph Cane
Yesterday I pulled cane from my vitrograph kiln for the first time. About the last 50 % came out hollow. I used a 6" d x 4 1/2" high clay pot with the hole reamed to 1/2". I used my Paragon kiln controller to set the temp. at 1650 F. The pot was filled with a stack of about 2" sq...

Stacey,
Lovely work. What was the diameter of the hole in your drop ring? Thanks.

Thermal shock on the way up. Try 200 dph to 1100 then 400 to 1480. No benefit of 30 min hold at 1240.

Ibailey,
I have successfully used the wet grinder that you mentioned. I was lucky to find a jig designed to hold an angle grinder with the disc held vertically. I put the work on a cheap "lazy susan" to finish a disc of any reasonable size. Worked well.

Jim, Break it up and cast a sink. Use a solid base then a pattern layer and pile up the pieces inside a 1/8 " fiber paper lined stainless steel ring. Pile up with a high center like a pie. After fusing, finish edges with steps to 400 grit wet sander or diamond disc wet angle grinder. Slump/fire...

Re: I need help with a difficult slump
Mary,
Your piece varies from one thickness to4. Bottom circle, 2 thickness of blue where the petals overlap and the top circle.
This high level of variation requires, as Marty said, a very slow heat up to avoid thermal shock. This variation also requires a very long aneal hold.

Re: Fusing segment help
Franzeska, 1/8 is too thin to be durable. It will also contract during your first fuse. I would cut two circles the exact diameter of your mold. Use your tracing to place your designs. Full fuse them together. Make sure that any "glass paint" that you use can stand up to a full fuse (1450-...

I suspect either face up or face down. Less so face down. Just a suspicion.

Havi,
If you fire this flat I would think the stripes would bend, being displaced by the extra thicknes of glass in certain areas.
What do others think?

Hold the piece of white behind it and see if any light comes through. Whites usually become more opaique after fireing.

Havi,
Have someone local that is familiar with small pumps (like garden fountain pumps.) Maybe just a cloged prefilter or tubing kink. If not, email the company. They may be able to ship a replacement pump.

Re: sudden, mysterious 'film' on glass
Bonnie,
The tack fuse is what I was referring to a being lost, not the slump (which would also be lost at full fuse.) I don't think any oversprays will glaze over (become shiney) at 1300, but if anyone else has experience at that temp. let us know.

Bonnie,
If you use Spray A you have to go to a full fuse to get it to flow and glaze. That will flatten the glass.
