Re: Buying a new kiln
patty, hi! i wasn't sure what parameters you used to narrow down your choices. so let me offer you another possibility, similar to what you have listed but a tad larger and brand new from paragon, the Clamshell 26FR. it has full fiber roof, elements in quartz tubes, mercury relays, and a bunch of ot...

Re: impromptu molds and dams
hi suzette, i'm as big a fan as anyone of re-purposing stuff for glassing....but a suggestion when you're on the hunt...consider the material of which the object you're considering is made. why? compare the melting point of the material to the temp it'd be subjected to in the kiln. if it'll melt or ...

Re: Which fusing schedule should I use to keep crisp lines?
Hi, Looking at your photo, it appears that there are different thicknesses of glass in your design. A tack or contour fuse will "glue" the glass together, but will not result in a smooth surface: if that's the case - the different pieces will still be sitting on top of each other. A flip a...

Re: Sconce fixtures?
hi! this might be a solution that would work for you.... IKEA has a wall light fixture, KVINTETT, that costs 19.99. it comes with a piece of glass, BUT the bullseye sconce mold sized glass will fit quite nicely. you will need to drill a couple of holes in the glass, but everything you need is there,...

Re: ramping schedule
Since everyone's kilns are all a little different, even someone with a kiln like yours may have different results than you do. I would think that if, as you say, you've got the glass schedule worked out, then that means you know how long it takes glass to get to certain temps in your kiln. So that s...

Re: looking for very old posts
Hi, Ron Coleman made a number of fabulous boxes and shared the boxes and how to make years ago. Brad was going to ( I think) try and garner Ron's old posts and pics because the posts had been lost as the board migrated from one version to another. I haven't heard it mentioned In a while but I'll bet...

hi cynthia, i think don's point of plan and photos would be great for specifics, but general thoughts before seeing the potential bldg site and existing structure: know your local zoning requirements - make sure new building perimeter will meet setback requirements and other local mandates; consider...

Re: Does this fusing mold need air holes?
I seem to recall that not so long ago, maybe a couple of months? , the someone posted here with a pic of this mold and glass with bubbles. The person had followed the instructions but it still bubbled up. The general consensus was that even though the instructions say no problem to fuse/slump all in...

Re: shank for glass buttons: metal, glass or plastic?
I just noticed that judith@vitrum studios, in her notice of a sale at the studio, lists glass button backs as something she sells. Maybe give her a call, ask about them, order a few? Vitrum is a board sponsor, so you can use the link in sponsors to get the website.

Re: Trouble with a Slump Firing
Hi, Some questions...were there 4 separate firings or all fired at one time? Were your molds elevated or were they sitting on the shelf? If sitting on the shelf, then holes in the mold wouldn't make any difference for letting the air be pushed out. If elevated but fresh kiln wash since they were use...

Good morning! You will find incredible amounts of info on this, and many other topics via the search box in the upper right corner of the ""title " blue stripe at the top of every page. ( I know, it must have a name, but I don't know what it is....). Wide open questions, like most of ...

Re: haze left after stuck kiln wash is removed
still getting this problem. it doesn't happen on the first fire of fresh wash but it does on second firings. I didn't think I had to reapply each time. I am going to 1490 and holding for 16 minutes. I realize that's a lot but my kiln is small and if I don't hold for a long time I don't get a full f...

Re: Why did my pieces fully fuse rather than contour?
anne marie, by any chance do you mean s96 for spectrum 96? i'm thinking that since you mention an anneal of 950 and that it's from their website, that's what you mean. in my kiln, that 30 min. hold at 1370 has the glass softening and going to 1470 at only 400/hr would mean a lot of headwork on the g...

Hi! You'll find lots of useful info on this website. Not everything is of equal value, though, so a great way to evaluate any info, is to start learning from a standard of excellence like the "warm glass" book written by brad walker, who runs this website. You can order it here. It will in...

Re: HOW do I fuse these together
Havi, A couple of ideas...... Could you put the melt upside down on the shelf, so the top would be in contact with the shelf, then place the strip construction on top, also upside down, dam ends and sides as others have suggested, and fire it like a flip and fire? I know the strip piece would be sus...

Re: My flat bed grinder
havi, i have a pump-powered filter in the goldfish pond. more than once i've had a pump "work" for five minutes or so, and then stop. someone at the pump company said this means the diapharm (?) is worn and needs to be replace. this was a relatively inexpensive pump, about $55 retail, and ...
